Thirteen years ago...
I love daddy, but daddy is mean to us sometimes, Nate and Nico don't like daddy very much. But he isn't mean all the time, most of the times he goes all crazy is when the sky turns black and the stars come out.
Before daddy arrives home, Nico and Nate always tell me to hide in the place where my clothes are and not to come out until they come and knock three times. But they aren't home tonight, they left to go to grandma and grandpa's house for the weekend, Nico didn't want to go without me and Nate got into a fight with daddy because he wanted me to go also, but daddy said no. Nate got hurt, and now me and daddy are all alone. They told me not to be scared and that everything was going to be okay, but I don't like being alone with daddy because he's even meaner when my brothers aren't home.
When I hear daddy's car pull up outside, instead of running to my bedroom, I go to the living room and hide inside a big closet, like Nate told me to. I once asked Nate why I had to do it, he told me it was because daddy likes to play hide and seek very much, so I simply smiled and hid, but clearly daddy isn't very good at playing because he found me very few times. I don't know why, but every time daddy found me, he got mad and hurt me a lot. I think I used to cry before when he did that, but daddy got even more angry when I cried, so I just stopped.
I hear daddy open the door and stay quiet. I think he's dizzy, because he stumbles a little bit when he enters.
"Kaira! W- where are you?" I don't answer. "Kaira?!" he shouts again, but as Nico told me, I don't answer. I have to wait until daddy falls asleep and then go to Nate's bedroom where he left me sandwiches to eat when I'm hungry. They told me I can only eat three sandwiches everyday until they come back home.
Daddy is mad now, I know it because everytime he is mad, his eyebrows go down and he starts to break things. My tummy still hurts from yesterday when daddy found me and got mad. He grabs one of the chairs in the kitchen and throws it to the left, so it breaks with a loud sound that makes me even more scared, but I remember what Nico told me.
"No matter how angry he gets, no matter how many things he breaks, you can't make a sound until he falls asleep, Kai. He can't hurt you if he doesn't find you"
"He can't hurt me if he doesn't find me," I whisper the words three more times before looking up. But when I do, daddy is looking at where I'm hiding, and then he starts shouting and suddenly the door to the closet is open and daddy grabs my arm dragging me out. I try to run the other way or scream but my arm hurts and my tummy too so I just stay quiet until he drags me to the living room.
"You ungrateful little bitch. Now listen to me; when I call you, you answer, is that understood?" I'm scared of saying something wrong, so I stay quiet. But his hand goes back and comes flying down on my face, my cheek hurts too now but I don't cry. "I sai-..."
Daddy is interrupted by a loud bang from the living room, he looks up and starts walking to see what it was. I follow him and go running to the stairs and hide when I see four big men standing in the door. When daddy sees them, his face turns white.
"Wha- what are you doing here?"
"Alister Kensington" The man in the middle spoke, his voice was very deep and the way he spoke was funny. "Long time no see," He smiled at daddy.
"Aleksei I- to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?" Daddy's voice trembled like Nico's does when he's about to cry as the three men come inside, behind them there is a very pretty lady. Her hair was like mine and she was smiling, but like her I stayed quiet.
He can't hurt you if he doesn't find you
"I believe your time is up, my friend. Where is my money?"
"I- I- please just give me a little more time. I swear I'll have it by the end of the month!" Daddy was shaking with fear now. Al-sei looked at daddy and smiled.
"You said the same thing last week Alister. You know who you are dealing with, and you know the consequences of not paying me back my money. Furthermore, I have no choice but to-"
"No! No please I'm begging you please no! I'll give you anything you want!" Daddy started screaming, but Al-sei shook his head.
He said two weird words I've never heard before and the two men walked to where daddy was. The lady in the back was still silent and smiling. Daddy started screaming and one of them took out a big silver knife, like the ones we had in the kitchen and pushed it into daddy's tummy.
Silence.
"No!" I screamed and ran to where he was, now lying on the floor. I tried to shake him, but he didn't move and there was an ugly dark red liquid coming from under him. I didn't understand, why wasn't he waking up?
"Well what do we have here?" I turned around and the mean man was looking at me with a smile. "What's your name sweetie?"
I stayed quiet, just like Nico told me to, but the man came closer until he was crouching in front of me. When he got closer, I showed him my teeth like Simba did in my favourite movie when someone mean came, but he just held my face with his large hand and started speaking words I didn't understand. The woman was still smiling behind him when she spoke.
"I think we just found our first subject for project Starvino, Aleksei"
And then everything went black.
