Lacey opened fire, standing farther down the platform than Brain and the others. While Napalm and Simon anchored the team's tech specialist, rope secured around his waist, Lacey targeted the tower of snakes.
She aimed her machinegun near the base of the serpents and raked her weapon back and forth. Dat-tat-tat-tat-tat... Lacey never stopped firing until her clip ran empty. She ejected the spent one and had another ready to load in a blink, but it was too late.
Captain Edgars raised his boots at the collapsing mass of scales and punched through the barrier.
Snakes lashed and snapped all around him, but he made it past without a bite.
Edgars slammed into the wall of the pit and held on with every fiber of his being.
"Pull! Now!" Brain shouted.
Slow at first, Captain Edgars was drawn out from the pit.
When Edgars reached the lip of the ledge and was pulled to safety, Napalm opened up his flamethrower to even the score. Snakes hissed and then shrieked, and then the chamber grew silent save the blood pounding through the captain's head.
The last thing he remembered was an angel descending on him. Lacey injected him with a syringe and went to work cleaning his hands and bandaging his wounds.
"If I ever see a snake again," Edgars huffed in ragged breaths. "It'll be too soon."
