Once upon a time in a world quite different from yours, a certain tale has been passed down, one that very few have ever known.

A long, long time ago, two angels were created from the same spark of life.

They weren't twins, but because of their origin, they were as close to being siblings as angels could be, and loved each other as such. But perhaps because they were made from a spark of life normally meant for one angel, their balance of justice and mercy became divided. The stronger one, who chose to act like the older of the two, found that punishing the sinners more satisfying than helping the good. Likewise, the sweeter, more childlike one enjoyed helping the good and guiding souls better than inflicting punishment. Contrary to what most would think, these two traits led them closer together. When the first would become too violent, the other would calm him down. When the innocent one would be too naïve, the other would gently reprimand her and prevent her from becoming used.

They would have stayed there forever, happily enjoying being the servants of God and having each other for company, if it wasn't for a curious feature the gentler one had.

As stated before, the two weren't perfectly alike. Their looks, interests, and views contrasted sharply, though this did nothing to cause chaos between them. But the greatest difference you would see at first glance would be their wings. The more mature one had feathery white wings, like those of the other angels, but his sister's wings were dark as a raven's.

The black-winged angel would often be made the object of ridicule for the others. They'd speak of how she didn't belong, or how she would do better than them because she had evil powers within her. Her brother would eventually make them stop, but as soon as they caught her alone, they would continue their jeering.

Truth be the told, she was in fact, better than them. As she went on more missions, her prowess showed. She could locate souls down below in the world that were trapped or lost and coax them to follow her with ease, something which was quite difficult for the others. Her brother would support her along with the majority of heaven's hosts, but the handful of jealous angels felt their spite grow. Why had she been created special? They bided their time for an opportunity to strike, hiding their hate.

As a great war was being waged on the earth, souls needed to be guided by the thousands. Earth became filled with angels and demons, each constantly escorting a soul to heaven or hell without a moment to spare. The angels had more trouble, even though their numbers greatly exceeded those of their enemies. The souls of the good would have to be taken quickly, for in the chaos, the demons could drag one down to their fiery domain.

In the flurry of souls and spirits, the simplest thing to discern the good from the bad would be their wings. If the wings were white and feathery, it was an angel. If they were black and leathery, they were a demon's. The two angels were quite aware of this, and they promptly made a plan to stop the black-winged one from being attacked by accident. The first one would bring the soul halfway up, then the second would bring him the rest of the way. They shared their plan to the others before acting it out, making  that the other angels wouldn't strike down the spot of black hovering among them.

One fateful day in the battlefield, the chaos became even greater than before. Angels rushed to and fro so quickly that it seemed as if they were streaks of light. The black-winged angel looked on, wishing that she could help the souls on earth. The plan she had made with her companion was still in effect, but if she went any closer to the earth, she might be attacked by mistake. Gazing about herself, she felt a twinge of loneliness. Her black wings were the only things marring a horizon of spotless white.
