The first thing I heard was the beeping sound of a machine nearby. My eyes felt too heavy to open just yet so I tried to take in my surroundings with my eyes closed. It smelt like medicine and cleaning products and I could hear people talking in the distance. I stirred slightly and that was when I felt a hand holding on tightly to mine.

"Ash?" A familiar voice whispered with hope in his voice. I groaned slightly because my head was pounding as I eventually opened my eyes. The room was white, so white that it was making my head hurt even more. My vision was blurry as I gazed around slightly before seeing the person that was holding onto my hand.

"You're awake..." Austin smiled brightly as he stroked the hair away from my eyes.

"W-what happened?" I croaked.

His face fell slightly, "D-Do you remember what happened at the bar?"

Memories instantly flooded through my head of the kidnapping scheme. I remember everything...I was just a little disorientated when I came round.

"Yes..." I replied, "I do..."

His lip trembled, "I-I'm so sorry..."

"Hey..." I grabbed his hand, "This is not your fault. Look at us...we're alive. How amazing is that?"

He shook his head and gulped, "I-I'm going to get a doctor..."

I just nodded and tried to move a bit but I flinched. A pain flashed right across my ribs, making it difficult to move. I gasped and sat back slowly while holding onto my side. Damn, they had got me good. I'd never been beaten up before and I hoped to never have to go through it again. It was agonising to say the least. Austin walked back in with a doctor in tow as he sat beside me. He took my hand in his as he assessed me. He looked heartbroken as I turned my attention to the doctor.

"Hello Alan...my name is Dr Dawson, "He flashed me an award winning smile, "It's good to see you awake. Do you know why you're here?"

"Um...I was beaten up?" It came out as a question because I wasn't sure how much the doctor knew about the situation.

"Yes, that's correct," He nodded, "You'll be relieved to hear that there was no permanent or serious damage. A couple of fractured ribs, a broken cheekbone and a concussion...no signs of internal bleeding. Obviously you have a lot of bruising and swelling which should go down over the next week or so. You lost consciousness sometime yesterday and we gave you some morphine to ease the pain and to give you a good night's sleep. We would like to keep you in for an extra night to double check that you're okay but...you should get sent home tomorrow."

I blinked a few times, "Okay..."

"I know it's a lot to take in," He smiled slightly, "But your cousin here can probably explain everything that you've missed over the last day."

I glanced at Austin and furrowed my eyebrows slightly in confusion. Cousin? He just shook his head as if to say not now.

"You're lucky to have him," Dr Dawson smiled, "He hasn't left your side all night..."

"I know..." My heart fluttered as I said, "Thanks doctor."

"Well...I'll leave you to it," Dr Dawson smiled again before leaving me and Austin alone in the room.

"Cousin?" I asked him.

"They would only let family stay and know what was going on," He explained.

"Oh okay..." I nodded, "So...what happened after I passed out? Is Danny and Ben-."

"In prison? Yes..." He smiled at me, "They're getting charged with attempted murder and kidnapping. Not only that...the police raided their houses to see that they're involved with drug dealing and all types of different gangs that have already been arrested. That along with their criminal record means that they're not coming out of jail for a very long time..."
