CHAPTER FIVE: DINER TROUBLES

It's Friday. Day three of returning back home. And day one of my new job that I didn't sign up for.

I wondered why they had me come in on the last day of the week. It would make sense to come in on Monday, the beginning of the week, rather than the last bloody day. I guess I can't complain though at least I wasn't just immediately pushed to work the average five days back to back at my first go.

After talking with Reggie yesterday, in the afternoon I went over to the diner and talked to my new boss about what I'll be doing and things along the lines of that. All I would mostly be doing is serving tables and cleaning around the kitchen.

The staff was small, but they all seemed friendly to the eye. There's a shocking total of ten employees— now eleven. I would be working alongside two other waitresses on my shifts, Lizzy and Jan.

Lizzy was around my age and was very polite with such graceful mannerisms. I couldn't tell what was warmer; the weather outside or the kindness in her emerald eyes. From the very second we were introduced she made me feel very welcomed and made our interactions feel like we knew each other for years.

"We're going to be great friends!" Lizzy exclaimed to me this morning as she gave me a very inviting hug.

Jan however was more older than us, but that didn't stop her from welcoming me into the business. She reminded me a lot of a grandmother I never got to experience due to the lack of my mother's want for family communication. She was sweet and just by the choice of her words she was wise and reminded you of a Jedi from Star Wars.

"You're cute as a button I'll tell you. Now if you ever need anything I'm happy to help." Jan explained to me after Lizzy had finally let go of me.

I was given my uniform which was a faded yellow dress with white hems that went to my knees and ended at the corner of my shoulders in a t-shirt form, it looked like your average waitress costume in a old school movie.

My pay was stable enough to get by and I think it's enough to help out with the family. That was one of things Reggie didn't elaborate on, how much of money trouble we were in. I don't know how to help more if he leaves out the biggest key part out.

"Veronica! Quit your lala gagging and get back to work." my boss, Jeffery, calls out from the stove where he's flipping raw hamburger patties, "Table won't serve themselves." he laughs.

Jeffery is a nice man by what I can tell by solely on this day. I'm lucky enough I didn't get a boss who is a control freak or was mean the second I walked through those front doors. He looks incredibly young and in definite good shape but I can tell he's older than I am just from the way he talks and the way he associates himself with others. I can only theorize that he's in his early forties'.

I shake my head and come back to reality, looking down at the tray of drinks I had on the counter in front of me, "Sorry!" I apologize as I quickly pick up the tray and make way to the customers that ordered.

Lizzy was off to the other side of the diner cleaning up from the last people who were just in here. Jan being in the back washing dishes since things have slowed down from the morning rush. At my table is a middle aged man and woman, probably husband and wife by the way they're interacting with one another.

I place their drinks on the table before reaching into my aprons pocket for my yellow notepad and black pen, "Have you guys decided on your order?" I ask kindly, a warm smile on my face as I watch the couple look down at their menu's.

The woman adjusts the thick glasses on her head before looking up to speak, "I think I'll take the burger with fries."

"I'll have the same as the lady." the husband responds with a caring smile, writing down their orders as neatly as possible for Jeffery to read.
