It felt like forever as they were walking. It started to get dark and the amount of wild life they were seeing had been increased by over half. Noah had found a cave opening in one of the small covered mountains on that island. Mark went in first to make sure it was clear and came out with a paled look on his face. Out of curiosity the other three went in to look. What Leo could see, other than Zelda’s hair, was wall drawings. Is that… Blood? Leo had thought. He gripped tighter to Zelda, which made her flinch, but better safe than sorry.
Then, from the back of the cavern, a cold breeze of air brushed past the group, leaving them shivering and turning blue. Zelda had somehow managed to scream, which frightened Leo so much that he fell to the ground and dropped her. Noah ran over to lift her and Leo up, abandoning Mark’s side.
There was a silence after that. Too quiet for Leo. He looked around and couldn’t see Mark. He tried calling out to him, but there was no answer. Noah had handed off Zelda to Leo to hold and ran deeper into the cave. Leo felt some warm liquid running down his jaw line and noticed that he had a gash on his temple. Leo nearly fell on the ground again when Noah came running back, grabbed Zelda’s arm and pulled those two out of the cave and kept running. He practically threw them along a path walk and he tripped and fell. All Leo heard was the gnashing of teeth and a silent cry of help.
It’s just me and her left, thought Leo as him and Zelda kept running. It was very dark now and up ahead was a dead end. No turning back Leo kept telling himself.
Within the blink of an eye, Leo was on the ground and Zelda was thrown at least four yards away from him. Struggling to get to her, Leo felt a tug on his ankle. He fought even harder but was being pushed into the ground with an invisible force he couldn’t see. At least he died first. He tried to scream but nothing came out. The last thing he heard was the scream of his best friend.
He gave up. Took his last breath, and sank into the cold of the dark, and lay there, motionless.
This is the island of the forbidden.
