Perfect (pt. 3)

I sat in the living room, happily eating my bowl of of chicken adobo, as she called it. Raya kept playing in the background and I paid it no mind because I had to close my eyes in appreciation of my decadent meal.

Turns out, Mrs. Locsin, the lady next door, called to her husband to give me a whole bowlful of their meal. "Feed the little angel of yours and your sweet husband too, okay?" She said, she even rubbed my back gently to ease me. It was clear to her that I was shaken, "Don't be shy to come over, sweetie, I'll be glad to teach you the recipe if you'd like it."

I was terrified but my fears were overpowered by how grateful and ecstatic I was. I had mustered the courage to step outside, met our nice neighbors, and got some really good food. I don't know what this is exactly, but I love it. It tasted vinegary and savory at the same time, it had chicken some strange looking leaves and they even gave me some rice because they went well together.

I'm not at all very fond of rice, they're okay on sushi, but they fill the stomach just right with this dish.

"I'm home," I heard Brandon call from the garage. "What is that smell?" I stiffened at his query, did it not smell good? Am I cooking it wrong? I made sure to follow her written instructions. I jumped when I felt Brandon's arms circled my waist from behind, "It's making me hungry," he said, planting a kiss on the back of my head. "Are you okay? You didn't respond when I called you," he turned me around, only to see the tears threatening to roll down my cheeks.

"I thought you didn't like the smell," I cried into his chest. I don't exactly know why I'm crying and why I can't stop, I was fully convinced he didn't like my cooking until he spoke again.

He merely smiled, hugged me a little tighter and wiped off some tears with his thumb, "My pregnant wife is so cute, don't worry, it smells amazing. What is it?"

I rubbed my face on his shirt and proceeded to blowing my nose as well, just to spite him. He shook his head and laughed a little, I guess Brandon will always be Brandon —kind, loving, patient. "It's called adobo, the nice old lady next door gave me the recipe," I showed him the handwritten note.

"You— you mean you went outside?" He was surprised, I don't blame him, I startled even myself. To think my pregnancy hormones gave me the courage to walk out again.

"Baby Roberts was dissatisfied by lunch and liked the smell coming from the neighbor's," I fiddled with my fingers and twisted my toes on the floor. He embraces me again and told me how proud he was but reminded me to still be careful, "I don't know what I'll do if anything happens to both of you."

The next couple of months, Susan and Randolph often came by with either food or a new recipe they want to share. Brandon's absence in the morning and early afternoon became less dull, I had friends coming over and the job I always wanted. "Everything's going great, baby. You're the only one I'm waiting for now," I lovingly caressed circles on my bulging belly. "Only 3 months left 'til you're finally here," I laughed when they kicked, almost responding to what I just stated. "The world has been cruel to me, but I'll protect you from it. I'll make sure you'll see all the beautiful parts."

Brandon and I finished preparing the nursery a few months ago. It was in neutral colors: white and beige, since we wanted the gender to be a surprise. We had teddy bears and all sorts of stuff animals, courtesy of their future veterinarian dad, of course.

Our friends had also come visit with lots of things to add to the room. You are loved, baby. I can't fathom how thia tiny human has changed my life and changed my self. If you only know the impact you have made in me —brought back the hope I never thought would return.

"Okay, the wallpaper should be—" Chloe started to argue. Her words came muffled and unclear to me, maybe because I was too busy drowning myself in fries swimming in ice cream.

Brandon rubbed the area over ny scapula and drew random squiggles with his index finger. "You want a spoon with that?" I nodded, eating this with a fork proved to be much too difficult for stubby fingers.

"—what do you think, Nikki?" Chloe's voice once again reverberates. Because I wasn't particularly paying attention to anything but this week's craving, my response came as slurs like when someone jabs random keys on their keyboard.

"See, even Nikki's not paying any more attention," Marco teased. "Let the pregnant lady enjoy her," he shoots the tub I'm firmly holding in place with one hand a glance, "ice cream-fries soup."

"I am having a strange sense of déjà vu right now," Theo interjected to ease the tension I just realized was engulfing the room.

"Déjà vu is more than just that fleeting moment of surprise, instantly forgotten because we never bother with things that make no sense. It shows that time doesn't pass. It's a leap into something we have already experienced and that is being repeated, by Paulo Coelho. Anyways, they already finished the nursery anyway. We're just here to visit Nikki and our wittle baby godchild, remember?"

Chloe slumped on the couch and her boyfriend immediately did his best to comfort her. Chloe gets too overexcited sometimes, a little impulsive too, but I guess that's one thing we love about her.

"Have you thought of names?" Marcy asked.

"Mot meally," I covered my mouth after liquid inevitably splashed out while I talked with melted ice cream in my mouth. I flashed them an apologetic smile, a few droplets still trickling down the side of my mouth.

My husband chuckles, "What she meant to say was, not really." Brandon hands me a napkin and I try to thank him without opening my mouth again. "We want the gender to be a surprise so the naming kind of slipped off our mind, especially when they started kicking."

"It's good to be prepared though, I'm sure. Maybe you can prepare a name for a girl and a boy so you have one either way?" Marcy proposed.

"And instead of creating 2 different names, why not use ones that are similar —an equivalent of some sort— like Sam and Samantha," Theo added. I'm a little glad the conversation has become a lot less chaotic.

"Those are actually really good ideas. Got any suggestions?" I asked after swallowing.

"Jack and Jill!" Zoey screamed and we all shifted in our seats to look at her like she grew another head. "What? Would you have rather Mickey and Minnie, don't tell me Barbie and Ken."

Theo shook her head and laughed a little, patting his girlfriend on the head, "Nice try, Zo."

"Nick and Nicky," Violet said, her hand scratching her chin. "On second thought, Nicky is somehow exactly the same as Nikki, that's a little confusing. Ugh, I want it to be something fun like Tu Morrow," there goes the last bit of sanity this group has I guess. We all broke into laughter.

"I was thinking something close to our names too, but what?"

"I know, how about Brie and Nick? That way, they either take after you or Brandon."

"That's a brilliant idea!" Brandon and I exclaimed together. I feel warmth flowing within me again, Brie, Nick.
