Arrested Again (pt. 2)
I quietly sat on the interrogation room chair, entertaining myself by rhythmically tapping on the table and sliding the cuffs on the wooden surface. I'm not sure how long it's been but long enough to have my anxiety levels peak.
Closing my eyes, I rest my head over my forearms and patiently waited for Officer Wakefield's return. What is taking him so long?
Just then, I hear the jingling of keys and the only door in and out of the room opened, revealing both Wakefield and Granados by the doorframe. "You're free to go. Mr. Chu confirmed your alibi." He gently unlocked the cuffs and gave me a pat on the back, "Sorry about that, we just had to make sure. Officer Granados will take you home."
As we walked towards the exit, I remembered how Jessica is detained here and how I want to see her. "Can— can I see Jessica? I saw her in the other police car when you came to get me." He gives me a questioning look but gestured me to follow him.
Jessica sat alone in the corner of her cell, her head and face buried in her knees. Her hair was in knots and there was makeup smeared all over her arms. The cell was small, grimy, and reeked of sweat and rusting metal. She didn't seem to notice my presence so I coughed.
When she looked up, I gasped in feign surprise. "I was right, you were the person I saw in the car." Her face was caked in makeup that weren't in their right places. Her lips started to quiver when she saw me out and about, probably expecting that she be the one freed, not me. "I know we've had our fair share of fights, but can that be over now? Was it you, Jessica? Did you kill him? Why?" I asked, loudly so Officer Granados could hear from the desk where he stood by.
"I— I didn't kill him. For all we I know, it could be you!" She yelled, catching me off guard when she stood up and launched herself at the bars of the cell.
"Why would I? I didn't even know him!"
"Yes, you do! You did it to implicate me, you want to get rid of me because he fucking killed your husband—"
"W-what?" I took a step back from the cell. Granados heard everything, I know, he's already walking towards us after making a quick conversation on his radio. "So he did k-kill Brandon?" I continued to walk backwards and tripped over my own foot and went tumbling down, landing on my butt.
Officer Granados was by my side in flash, helping me get up. "Jessica!" I yelled at her, trying to pry the officer's hold on me so I could reach the woman whose face has contorted into a horrified, rueful expression. "Jessica, tell me! So it was Damien? He killed Brandon?" I push Officer Granados away and ran towards her. I grabbed her by her shirt as she tried her best to remove her clothing from my grasp, "Why? Why would he?" Who sent him, Jessica? Who the fuck sent him? Tell the officer, I want him to hear you say his name.
A hand on my shoulder stops me from pressing her further and I am slightly pulled away from her cell. "We'll handle it from here, Mrs. Roberts." Regret flashed in his eyes, he was sorry because he knew I was right. If only he listened.
If he listened Damien would be in jail and not in a tomb.
As I was being escorted out, I tilted my head back to see the dread on Jessica's face. I gave her a subtle wave and a smile. Her expression quickly changed into an angry one as she ran towards the bars, she screamed my name. "You are dead, Nikki. This isn't over!" Over for you and Patrick. Everything she's saying will only be held against her at this point, she should do herself a favor and shut her mouth.
Breaking News
Jessica Hunter, spearhead of Justice for MacKenzie, suspected for murder of Damien Francz. Fingerprints and written notes found on the scene led Hunter's arrest. She is due in court on the 29th, where she will be tried for first-degree murder and her alleged role in the hit-and-run of Brandon Roberts earlier this March.I sat in the gallery, at a corner where I was sure Jessica could get an easy glimpse of me. I want her to see the look on my face when they tell her the verdict. I want her to stare into my eyes as they pull her away to her jail cell, where she will be staying for, hopefully, the rest of her life.
"Court is now in session for the trial of Jessica Hunter, charged with the first-degree murder of Damien Francz." The judge said. "Is the prosecution ready?"
"Yes, your honor." The man adjusted his glasses as he stood from his seat. He looked about twice my age, with his graying hair and clear sign of male pattern baldness on the center of his scalp. He must have been working before I started walking —wise, experienced. The Francz family really wants to win this case. Damien's grandfather sat 4 rows in front of me, one hand on his cane and another on his lap.
"Is the defense ready?"
"Yes, your honor." The straight-faced woman beside Jessica said.
"Your opening statement if you please, prosecution."
Note: I don't have enough brain cells to write another court scene, I'm sorry 😭.
