birds - Imagine Dragons
When I tell you I cried watching the video TwT‼️Also TW: referenced selfharm - not cutting and not graphic, but just making sure‼️
Everything was awful, and mostly, it was Wakatoshi's fault.
Not only did he make the horrible decision to break up with the love of his life —because of the distance, he had said. What a stupid reason— but now he is sitting in a karaoke bar between Kageyama and Hoshiumi and his ex-boyfriend is currently climbing on the stage.
He knew he shouldn't have let his teammates convince him to come, but now that he's here, he can't move away. Eyes fixated on Satori, breathing uneven, fingers gripping his glass so firmly it's possibly going to break. Wakatoshi doesn't even notice.
He can't do this, not now or ever, but no words escape his mouth and his body is frozen.
Satori takes the microphone in one hand and adjusts his hair with the other. It's longer than it used to be when they were together, untamed, but still as red as ever. He wonders if that is some kind of sign that he will ignore on purpose.
"Hey, isn't that one of your middleblockers? I could swear he was on your team in highschool..." Kageyama says, not knowing that they were so much more than teammates. But that's the point: they aren't any more. Now they're just strangers, acquaintances at best. "Yes, we were in the same year." he says blankly, not providing any more information than necessary. He hopes they get the hint.
They do, because it's quiet. For a moment at least, because then the music starts and all his attention is on Satori. Again. And it never actually left in the first place. Not even when they broke up; especially not then.
Satori sings in english, and even though he doesn't understand all of it, the first few words hit him like a truck. It's been so long since he heard him sing, too long since he heard Satori's voice in general. He is tense, so tense, and he doesn't know if he is holding back tears or just trying not to stand up and go— either out of the bar or towards his ex and beg him for forgiveness.
"Seasons they will change, life will make you grow, change will make you cry, cry, cry."
It's the first time he understands all of the lyrics, and it makes him shudder. "Man, he really sings his heart out. Must be really feeling the song." Hoshiumi whispers to Kageyama, but because he's sitting between them, Wakatoshi can still hear it. "Sounds like he's singing about his own life, it's so emotional..." the setter replies, expression thoughtful. He's the most fluent in english out of the three, so he must understand more than Wakatoshi.
"Love will never die, die, die. I know that —ooh— birds fly in different directions. Ooh, I hope to see you again..."
Realisation hits him when his brain processes the lyrics a little too late: Maybe Satori really sings about his past, and if he does... There's a chance that Satori is talking about him, about their time together. His heart is pounding, and he can't remember when he last blinked or even took a breath. It doesn't matter, it's not important. Nothing is, only Satori. There is only Satori.
Wakatoshi hears someone sniff and out of the corner of his eye sees Kageyama wiping a tear. "What is he singing?!" he asks, voice hushed, but if it really is about him, he needs to know. Kageyama turns towards him, eyes dazed, and explains: "He's singing about something that ended —a relationship I think— and says he wished it didn't end. He sings that everything changes and even if your path divides you..." his voice cracks, but Wakatoshi can't blame him. His throat feels sore and his eyes are starting to wet, but Kageyama continues without noticing. "...even if your path divides you and things change, love will stay..."
