Kassie's pov***

Last day of college! Big freakin deal! I still have to work. I still have to support my lazy ass mom. I was going to celebrate by going out of town for a couple days. Until mom stole my hidden money a few days ago. I had to cancel my plans of a long weekend escape. Go figure! Any time I want something for myself, she ruins it. So instead of participating in the graduation ceremony, I am working overtime. Mom didn't come home last night. I haven't seen her since I noticed my money missing. Maybe I should pull my own disappearance act. Maybe if I leave and she returns to an empty apartment, she will take responsibility for her own actions. I doubt it though. She always knows when I start saving a little money to move forward. That is when she comes back and the vicious cycle continues.

It has been a month since mom left. I haven't heard a peep from her. I decide to splurge and order take-out Chinese for dinner. When I get home, there are two bikes sitting outside my apartment. I think nothing of it. I continue to park my car. I gather my dinner and laptop bag and head for my door. As I enter and turn to shut the door, it is blocked by two huge bikers.

I scream and drop my dinner.

They laugh at me. "What do you want? " I ask as I try to lower my heartbeat.

"Where's Mona?" The taller one asks in a growl.

The shorter one walks past me and starts looking in the other rooms.

"I don't know. She left about a month ago. While I was at work."

He backs me to the wall without touching me. I am scared shitless!

"Now that's a shame. She owes us money. Looks like you're payin now. Unless you tell us where she is."

"This place is empty. Nothin of value either." The shorter one says from the hallway. He takes the key off my keyring.

"You have twenty-four hours to get a thousand dollars. If you don't get it to me, you'll regret it. Understand?" I nod. "Or I'll take a trade for every day that you are late!" He sneared before leaving. They both made sure to squash my dinner with their boot covered feet. I hear them laughing as I shut my door.

I slide down the door, shaking uncontrollably. What the hell? A thousand dollars by tomorrow? There's no way I can get that much! I pull my phone to me and dial it. No answer, so I leave a message. "Mother! Two guys came looking for you. They want a thousand dollars by tomorrow. They threatened to harm me every day until they get their money. You need to get me that money immediately! If you don't show up with it, you will no longer be anything to me but a memory! Get me that money!" I hung up and wondered what to do next. I gather my destroyed dinner and throw it away.

Sitting on the couch with my sandwich and tea. I have the TV on for the noise, but my mind is coming up with solutions and shooting them down. I come up with nothing.

The next day I get off of work and drive past my apartment. I see the bikes sitting there. I keep driving. After an hour, I have no where else to go. I decide to face the music and try to reason with them. I pull into my parking spot and go into my apartment. They are already in my living room.

They both have a shit-eating grin on their faces. "Well look who decided to come home! I hope that you don't have our money." The bigger one said as the shorter one laughed.

"I don't have your money. I need a couple days. My mother stole what little money I had when she disappeared. I just need two more days and I will have your money. I promise!" I beg.

They both stood. "You need two more days? That's great! We can do that. Can't we, sidekick?" The bigger one said as he approached me.

I back toward the wall. They both smell like fish and unwashed bodies. My nose rebels.
