Chapter 6
Monday came too soon. The rest of the weekend was uneventful: Elle's mother had claimed a family day and, while I was invited, I had too much homework too do anything else. Conner tried to call me, but I ignored the call, opting to stay holed up in my room with my history textbook and the piles of papers that I had to complete.
I barely made it to lunch and when I did, I collapsed at the table, Elle attacking my lunch way too enthusiastically.
"Cheer up, buttercup. It's Monday!" Elle chirped and I groaned.
"That's exactly the reason I'm not cheery, just so you know." I responded, starting on my cookies. I really needed a pick me up and I didn't feel like the healthy stuff my mom packed for me.
"Hey," A boy's voice came from behind me and Elle tried to hide the cookies she started eating.
"Hey," She said, staring sheepishly at whoever was behind me.
On a normal day, I would have been curious enough to turn around, but this was a Monday and I could not work myself up enough energy to care.
"Is this seat taken," The mystery male asked as I shoved another cookie in my mouth, pulling out the chair opposite Elle.
"NO!" Elle said a little too loudly and I glared at her for disturbing my ear drums.
I finally deemed the person as important to lift my head for and was startled to see Lucas sending me a grin. I groaned, dropping my head back onto the table, hoping that when I brought it back up, Lucas would be gone. I just wanted it to be a normal day and not have to worry about anyone potentially judging me.
I was horribly disappointed when 5 minutes later, Lucas was still sitting there, except this time, he was eating his food from the tray he had brought over. He was staring at me curiously, and I grabbed one of Elle's cookies, seeing as she wasn't going to eat them and had moved on to her chicken salad. She was effectively avoiding all the lettuce and I almost laughed at the sight. I shoved the cookie in my mouth and when Lucas gave me a curious glance, I glared back at him.
"What?" I mumbled, cookie still filling my mouth.
"What?" He asked, startled.
"Why are you staring at me?" I asked, swallowing my cookie and then reaching for my own salad.
"I'm not staring," He feigned innocence and I shrugged, starting on my food.
"Why are you sitting here?" Elle asked curiously.
"Do you want me to leave?" Lucas asked.
"Yes," I mumbled under my breath at the same time Elle practically shouted "NO!"
"Okay, then," Lucas said, flashing me another grin as if he heard me.
"You never answered my question," Elle leaned towards Lucas slightly.
"I thought, 'why not?'" He shrugged.
"Man, your thoughts are quite complex," I commented and Lucas laughed.
Conner appeared at that time and I slammed my head on the table.
"Conner!" Elle said much too enthusiastically.
"I thought you had a later lunch," I said, rubbing my head after pain burst through it.
"Test," He responded and pulled out a chair and sat down.
I shoved more food in my mouth, ignoring manners all together and asked Elle about the english test she had taken this morning and I was going to take right after lunch.
"It was so rough! Who the heck cares about the Great Gatsby? I can quote Romeo and Juliet! That should make me exempt from all english activities for the rest of my life!"
Lucas laughed. "I don't think that's quite how it works."
Elle stuck out her tongue, then, very dramatically, she reached her arms out upwards as if talking to someone. "Oh Romeo, Romeo. Wherefore art thou, Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name. Or, if thou wilt not, only say the word, and I shall no longer be a Capulet."
Conner looked astounded and Claire had come up behind him at the end of Elle's monologue, Bethany at her side.
"Oh, crap. Is Elle quoting Shakespeare again?" She laughed and took her seat.
Elle moved her hands so they were towards Claire. "But doth, what light through yonder window break? It is the east and Claire-et is the sun."
Claire threw a limp, soggy looking fry in her direction before pushing her tray away from her in disgust. Elle ducked and Bethany gave me an questioning look, as if asking why Lucas and Conner were sitting with us.
"I don't know," I said out loud, everyone turning to look at me weirdly. "It's a Monday. I don't question things on Mondays."
"Oh," Bethany said, dipping her overly burnt fry into ketchup. It seemed as thought the cafeteria had no perfect medium.
"So, Lucas, what do you think about that movie Mr. Carlton showed us?
