Chapter 5
Somehow, I got conned into going out to lunch with them. Elle had begged so we called our mothers to get permission from them. Elle had lost miserably, but still seemed to be elated that she was talking to Lucas.
We all went to Friendly's, a classic, and the waitress audibly groaned when we all came waltzing in. It was almost 2 in the afternoon, after bowling for a few hours so it wasn't busy and we were quickly seated.
When we sat down, I somehow got squished in a booth between Sam, from my team, and Elle, who immediately tried to squeeze us so Lucas could fit. Lilly, the lucky girl, got one of the seats on the table attached to the booth and a glared at her when she seemed to laugh.
The waitress was just about to leave when Elle piped up, asking for a kid's menu and soon, everyone at the table wanted one. The waitress glared at us but obliged.
"We're getting our food spit in," Andrew, a kid with droopy brown hair, commented and a few people shot him disgusted looks while others groaned.
"Why'd you have to say that?" Lucas asked, reaching across the person on the other side to smack him in the back of the head. Andrew leaned over too, and soon the two were in a fight to the death. Well, until the kid in between them had had enough and pushed them both away from him.
"So, Elle, how did you and Lucas become friends?" Lilly asked, leaning into the table. Lucas turned from the fight, distracted, and put his arm around Elle in a friendly way.
"Well, Lillian, my friend. Elle just so happens to be in one of my classes and Mr. G didn't write what we had to read. Since Elle seemed to be the only one who actually kind-off pays attention in that class, I'd thought I asked her. It's a story for the ages."
Elle leaned into him in a barely noticeable way, but I caught the slight gesture, if only for the fact that I had a little bit more breathing room.
"Romantic," Xander muttered under his breath and I laughed slightly. He seemed surprised that I heard it and I smiled at him.
My phone rang then and I pulled it out of my pocket, struggling because it was in my back pocket. I checked the Caller ID and started motioning that I needed to get out, pressing the answer button.
"Hello?" I asked, trying to get Elle's attention so she would move.
"Hey! Alex! What are you doing?" Conner's voice crackled through the speaker.
"Uh, nothing. What's up?" I asked, Elle finally noticing me, and telling Lucas to slid over.
"Wanna do something today?" Conner asked and I was taken aback. Conner and I had never hung out outside of school.
"Alex! What are you doing?" Andrew asked as I started to walk away from the table.
I lifted up my phone as an answer and pushed my way out of the restaurant.
"Who was that?" Conner asked, clearly having heard the voice on the other side.
"Just a friend," I replied, feeling extremely awkward.
"A boyfriend?" Conner asked and my temper flared. Who was he to ask if I had a boyfriend.
"No," I said briskly.
"So your busy," His voice was almost jealous.
"Yeah, kinda," I responded, rolling my eyes at his tone.
"Hey, Alex! What do you want?" Lucas pushed through the door and I turned to face him.
"Tell Elle that I want what I normally get," I responded and Lucas leaned in to yell to Elle.
"Who's that?" Conner and Lucas said almost simultaneously.
"Another friend," I responded to Conner. "I have to go. I'll talk to you later." My voice was short and I pushed the end button angrily when he started to protest.
"No one," I said to Lucas.
"Well you didn't seem to be happy," Lucas noted.
"Yeah, it was stupid. Whatever," I motioned to go inside, but Lucas stood in my way.
"If you ever want to talk..." Lucas started grabbing my phone, "Now you have my number." He pressed a few buttons. "And now I have yours," He winked then opened the door for me.
"Thanks," I said, entering the building.

The table was absolute chaos. The waitress had brought back our drinks and somehow, everyone had ended up with a blue drink with gummy sharks in it.
Elle slid out of the booth when we approached and gave me a sheepish smile. "I know you normally get hot chocolate, but everyone was getting one and I didn't think you'd care too much."
"It's fine," I got into the seat and Elle got back in, followed by Lucas. "But you're buying."
A fight broke out at the end of the table, Andrew and another boy speaking loudly about who's drink was who's and the waitress glared at us.
"Shut up!" Lilly said, "We're going to get kicked out."
The boys both stopped and I sighed a breath of relief. I did not feel like getting kicked out of a restaurant again.
