Chapter 1
It was the following Tuesday when Elle finally pointed out who the mystery guy was.
"If you turn around, he's the tallest guy in the group behind you." She said out of the blue before 4th period.
"Who is?" I asked, turning around quickly, finding the person she was talking about. He was only a few inches taller that the rest of the group and had broad shoulders and a very defined jaw. His hair was a blond mess, cut short and ruffled. He had a hint of stubble lining his face and I was taken back by the blue eyes that met me when I looked up from observing his outfit.
I adverted my eyes then turned around completely. "He's cute." I responded.
Her eyes glinted with excitement but she kept her face neutral. "I know, right?"
"Why don't you say hi to him?" I asked as we started walking to our classes.
"Did you see who he was with? No way am I going to talk to him with that group!"
"Who was with him?" I asked, throwing a look over my shoulder at the group that was slowly dismantling.
"Boys. And lots of them. No way. Not happening." She shook her head furiously and closed her eyes, nearly running into a wall before I grabbed her arm and pulled her away from it.
"Hey, doofus, you missed your class." I pointed down the hallway and her eyes opened and her head flipped around, leaving me with a face-full of her long hair.
"Crap! Bye! Have a good day!" She said, turning around and hurrying in the opposite direction.
I laughed and turned back to my classroom, entering it and dumping my stuff on the seat of my desk.
"Hey," Conner piped up from next to me.
"Hi," I nodded my head as I pushed my backpack to the floor. It hit with a thud and I plopped myself down on a chair.
"How has your day been?" He asked and I laughed.
"Crazy," I commented.
Conner's face turned curious and his lips turned into a smirk. "Why?"
"Elle."
Conner laughed loudly and brushed his too long dark hair out of his eyes. He was a far cry from Elle's crush, but was still handsome in his own way. He had dark brown eyes and his face was cleanly shaven. His clothes were nice, but casual and he carried himself with confidence.
"For any other reason, I would expect more of an explanation. But since it's Elle..." He trailed off and I nodded, grabbing my binder out of my backpack.
"Yeah, since it's Elle."

Conner quickly caught up with me after class. I had packed my bag 5 minutes before class ended and hightailed it out of there. I had lunch right after class and no way was I missing any time from that.
"Alex! Wait up!" Conner grabbed my arm, slowing down from his half jog.
"Hey," I said, my pace never slowing down. Conner easily matched and when I made a sharp right, he anticipated it.
"So, what are you doing this weekend?" He asked and I gave him a curious glance.
"Why?"
"Well, do you want to hang out?" He wrung his hands and I could tell he was nervous.
"Yeah, we should get a group together," I smiled at him and his face fell. I knew he was
expecting more, but my mom would never let me go out with a boy alone, especially one she had only met a few times.
"Sounds like fun," he responded, his tone flatter than it had been before.
I didn't respond, letting the awkward silence fall upon us. Our conversations always ended up like this, uncomfortable and quiet.
"This is my class. Bye," Conner turned and I offered a half wave. I was relieved not have to deal with him, as awful as that sounded. It was always weird between us, no matter how hard we tried.
I made it to the cafeteria a few moments later. I claimed our table and sat down at it, opening my lunch box and unpacking the various containers.
Elle collapsed at the table, a few minutes late. Normally she was the first one here and Conner had held me up longer that normal. She grabbed a salad from my lunch and a fork and began eating.
"You'll never believe what happened to me! Man your mom is the bomb." She said, not stopping to take a breath before opening a package of cookies.
"What happened?" I asked as I grabbed a cookie. When she glared at me, I shrugged back.
"Get your own," She shooed me off.
"They are mine!" I fought back.
"No," she reached into my lunch box and grabbed out a pack of Oreos. "These are yours." She tossed them in my direction and I smiled sheepishly.
"Right," Everyone knew Elle hated Oreos and my mom had been packing us both lunch for as long as I can remember. She tried to differentiate the food so we wouldn't fight, but the arguments over food seemed inevitable between us.
"You never told me what happened." I said and noticed that Elle's cheeks were flushed and a smile had not left her face, even when I ate one of her cookies.
"He talked to me!" She flung her arms out and I just barely caught a container of apple slices before they hit my lap.
"Who?" I asked, looking around for the rest of the people who normally sit with us at lunch.
"Who do you think idiot? Lucas!" She could barely contain her excitement as she bounced in her seat.
"Who's Lucas?" Bethany came up from behind us, taking a seat across from me. She dropped her tray on the table and stared disgustedly at her food.
"Who's Lucas?" Elle repeated dramatically. "The boy of my dreams, the one I have been in love with for about the last three months."
I rolled my eyes at Elle's dramatics and Bethany and her twin sister, Claire, who recently joined us, shared a look.
"What did Lucas do?" Bethany asked, having missed the first part to Elle's story.
"He talked to me!" Elle half-shrieked and Claire and I shot her a glare to quiet down.
"What did he say?" Claire asked, giving the same look to her food Bethany had earlier. "You know, you guys are so lucky you have your lunch packed for you."
I smiled, "Yeah, my mom's a saint for dealing with this one's pickiness." I poked Elle in the side.
"Okay, now that your side conversation is over and I have been patiently waiting," I rolled my eyes at this but let her continue. "He just introduced himself to me and asked what we had to read for tonight. But it's still something, right?"
"It is," I agreed with her and Claire started complaining about her gym teacher. I let my eyes wander and they found a pair of blue eyes that were staring at our table.
