Nick Wilde had just heard the news that his partner Judy had died and he was devastated, he wasn't assigned to her murder case but he wanted to investigate because he thought that the rest of the police force were incompetent. So Nick investigated. He discovered that Kermit had recently moved to Zootropolis and had a vendetta against Judy so Nick took Kermit into custody to question him.
