"Asp."
I opened my eyes slowly, the machines beeping quietly. It was becoming a sort of background noise now, almost calming.
"Aspen."
That voice again. Familiar, warm, Brayden. I sat up quickly and looked around the dark room, a small nightlight lit up the corner of the room near my bed so that it wasn't pitch black. My heart, no his heart was pounding quickly as I scanned the room for his wide smile, his blue eyes, his sea breeze scent.
"Brayden?" I called out reaching over to click the light on. They have this cool thing in hospitals where you just push a button and the whole room lights up like some bright ass supernova.
"ASPEN!" I heard Juno yell at me from behind the curtain, his voice laced with irritation and sleep. "Turn off the damn lights before I go blind and sleep you crazy bastard!"
"You're pretty cranky." I muttered clicking the button again so that the night could resume its peaceful slumber.
"It's 2 in the morning and I have cancer and as Hazel Grace says 'SLEEP FIGHTS CANCER' so let me sleep you prick." Juno grumbled as he turned away from my side of the room.
The rest of the night it was silent, save for the usual nighttime hospital noises and the usual nighttime noises in general. The grasshoppers sang their sex song, the moon rocked gently in the dark sky, and the air blowing from the vents let me imagine that it was a soft breeze.
"Say it." Brayden said as he covered my eyes with his arms, a smile stretched across my face and blonde hair flying everywhere in a sort of wild fashion.
"Say what?" I said laughing loudly as he pulled me back, waves hitting the back of my legs. The sea salt stung invisible cuts on my skin and the warm sticky night air filled the air with a sweet summery feel.
"You know what." Brayden said as he kissed my cheek, I could feel his smirk against my face and lightly punched him.
"Fine, I LOVE YOU!" I screamed just before he fell backwards into the water, me included.
