Letting out a deep breath, your eyes fall on the door in front of you as you try to work up the nerve to knock. No noises come from the other side of the door, prompting you to wonder if your new music teacher is even home today. Finally, you give in, stepping forward and knocking rhythmically.
Shuffling can be heard from inside his apartment, only for the door to slowly open to reveal the blonde-haired man a few moments later. He greets you with a small smile, taking note of the various music books once again clutched tightly against your chest.
"Good morning. It seems as if you came prepared," He says as he gestures for you to walk through the doorway, "Come in, (Y/N)," He closes the door behind you, following you as you move to set your books down on his coffee table.
You look up from your books to offer him a warm smile, "Thank you again for agreeing to give me lessons. I really do appreciate it."
"There's no need to continue thanking me," He counters as he waves you off, "I chose to give you lessons on my own accord," His eyes fall on the grand piano sitting in the corner of the room. Almost as if he's drawn to it, he takes a few steps toward it, "Are you ready to begin?"
"Mhm! Definitely," Comes your sound of confirmation as you follow him over to the large instrument, a bashful smile present on your face, "Although, I'm kind of nervous."
"There's no need to be," He pats the piano bench, gesturing for you to sit, "I'm certain that you will catch on just fine. You said you know how to read sheet music?"
You nod in response to his question, "Yes. I hope that's helpful."
"It certainly will be," He sits down beside down, his leg nearly touching yours as he picks up the book sitting in front of the piano, "Let me pick a good song to begin on."
You show up for your lessons on time every day, even showing up early on some days. Kurapika is only friendly towards you, yet formal and slightly distant. After a few weeks of lessons, you begin bringing him breakfast or snacks as a thank you. He tells you that this isn't necessary but he always accepts them with a smile.
Today, you hadn't shown up early as you said you would. Kurapika cracks his door open slightly, surprised to not find you standing and waiting for him. He checks his watch, making sure that it's the usual time for you to show up.
"It's unlike (Y/N) to show up late," He thinks aloud to himself, "I'll give her a few more moments before I call her."
He takes one last look down the hallway before closing his door and walking back over to his couch and sitting down. He glances at his phone, seeing no new notifications. After about ten minutes of waiting, he pulls up your contact info and presses the call button, however, nobody answers.
"Strange..." He waits for a few more moments before trying again and receiving no answer, "I suppose something came up," He says to himself before letting out a sigh, "Or perhaps she gave up."
He feels a pang of sadness at the thought of no longer seeing you but he quickly waves it off, "I shouldn't have grown so attached so quickly. This feeling is not pleasant." His eyes fall on the books you had left on his coffee table, "I hope she comes to retrieve these."
He goes on with his day as he normally would, only to be interrupted by a knock at the door about an hour later. He's surprised by this but he answers the door as he normally would, although a frown is plastered to his face. His frown quickly disappears after his eyes fall on your figure.
You're hunched over, panting for breath, your clothes soaked wet from the pouring rain outside. You look up at him with a small smile, greeting him through ragged breaths, "Kurapika, I made it. I'm so sorry I'm late."
"(Y/N), you're soaked wet! Did you run here in the rain?" He questions you with a look of worry in his eyes. You nod in response, prompting him to grab your hand and pull you inside, "You need to dry off and get changed before you get sick."
"Thank you, but I'm fine."
"You are not," He hands you a large towel to dry off with, "I will find you some spare clothes to change into. Stay put."
"Kurapika-"
He cuts you off before you can finish your thought, "There is no need to argue. I don't wish for you to get sick."
"I was going to say thank you actually," You reply with a sheepish smile on your face.
"Oh..." He seems surprised by this, allowing a small smile to encompass his face, "Of course. You're welcome. I'll bring you some dry clothes. Just give me a moment."
He disappears into another room while you begin to dry your hair off with the towel he handed to you. The blonde-haired man brings you back an oversized dress shirt of his and some sweatpants. You finish drying off and change in his bathroom before sitting down on the couch, a steaming cup of tea sitting in front of you. When he notices your small shivers, he gently sets a blanket over your shoulders before sitting down beside you.
You and Kurapika sit beside each other, a comfortable silence filling the room as you take small sips of your tea. After a few moments of this, Kurapika finally speaks, his voice quiet and calm, "You do not have to explain if you aren't comfortable, but may I ask why you showed up late?"
You set your cup back down on the table, averting your eyes from him for a second, as silence fills the room once more. You let out a long breath before you speak again, your voice hushed, "I was helping my friend when I lost track of time," You pause for a moment, your eyes falling back on him, "She's in the hospital again. She wasn't feeling very well so her mother and I rushed her to the hospital," You hesitate before blurting out, "I should have called you, I'm so sor-"
"I apologize for asking. You're a very good friend for taking care of her," Kurapika replies with a comforting smile on his face, "Is she feeling better?"
You nod in response to this, "Yes, she seemed much better when I left," You look down, sadness gleaming in your eyes, "But I'm still worried."
Kurapika gently sets his hand on top of yours, drawing your gaze back to him again, "It's very thoughtful of you to worry, but you should worry about yourself as well," He offers you a reassuring smile, "If you ever need to take a break from your lessons for anything, please let me know. I don't mind one bit."
You let out a sigh of relief after hearing his kind words, "I really appreciate that. Thank you, Kurapika."
"There's no need to run here in the pouring rain. I am more than willing to wait for you," He realizes what he has just said, looking away from you with a slight blush dusting his cheeks, "Please take good care of yourself so that we may continue our lessons."
"I will," You reply to him with determination laced in your voice, "I always look forward to our lessons together."
"As do I," His eyes drift to the piano momentarily before his gaze falls back on you, "Let's take a break for today. We can pick up where we left off tomorrow."
"Are you sure that's okay?"
He nods in response, "Of course. Would you like something to eat? I can order us some lunch."
"I'd really like that. Thank you," You respond as you pull the blanket around you tighter.
Kurapika takes his phone out of his pocket as he wonders, "What would you like to eat? I'll pay."
He doesn't take no for an answer and eventually, he orders you both lunch. As you two wait for the food, you sit and chat, Kurapika trying his best to cheer you up. As Kurapika watches you excitedly tell him a story about you and your friend, he can't help but feel incredibly relieved that you did show up today.
He can't help but think to himself, 'But is it still okay to feel this attached to her?'
