Beep. Beep. Beep.
Shawn heard the beeping sound, starting quietly and then as if it were right next to him. He opened his eyes and blinked a few times before looking at where he was.
It was a plain hospital room. White walls, blue sheets. A lot of equipment. It then occured to him that he'd been shot. He looked at his chest.
There was a large white bandage and a tube connected to his left arm, which was also in a sling. He couldn't feel any pain, so he assumed that the IV had some sort of pain medication. He also saw that nobody was in the room with him, so he just decided to go back to sleep.
"I'm going to kill you if you die..." Someone sat down next to him. Shawn opened his eyes slightly to see that it was Gus.
"Well, buddy, I don't know exactly how that would work," He grinned.
"Shawn!" Gus yelled in surprise. "Thank god you're okay!"
"Of course I'm okay," Shawn smiled at his best friend. "It takes more than a bullet to go through me."
Like someone having complete control over your life, making you commit crimes and lie to your best friend? Shawn sighed, forgetting that Gus was there.
"Hey, what's wrong?" He asked. "You're fine, right?"
"Oh, uh, yeah," Shawn stammered."I guess I'm just a little in shock of what happened."
"You know that's right," Gus scoffed. "Well, I should probably go get your dad."
"Or not," Shawn said. If anyone could see through his act, it would be Henry.
"Shawn, he's your dad," Gus made it to the door. "I have to."
Shawn sighed again. He still didn't know if there was anything to do about Rollins and Longmore making him work for them. He'd just have to play off the entire thing for as long as it took for them to leave him alone. He was pulled from his thoughts when he heard a cough.
"Hey, Shawn," Henry sat down next to the hospital bed. "Just saying, usually, if you were hospitalized, I'd only pay for pain meds the first twenty four hours, but I'm gonna make an exception for this."
"Yeah you will," Shawn muttered. "But thanks."
"Hey, just don't get yourself shot again," Henry meant it lightheartedly, but Shawn couldn't take it that way. Of course he didn't want to get shot, but he didn't want to do the dirty work for Rollins either. Unfortunately, the threat of the lives of innocent people forced him to choose to do the latter.
"I'll do my best," Shawn gave a lopsided grin.
"Alright, son," Henry got up. "I'm going to leave you to rest, okay?"
"Yup," Shawn watched his dad leave and let out a deep breath. He didn't know how he was going to keep acting like nothing other than what they knew happened, but he knew that he had to do it.
"Alright, Mr. Spencer," The nurse smiled at Shawn kindly. "Over the past three days in here, you've shown good enough improvement to be discharged today."
Shawn smiled, but he wasn't happy. Rollins was definitely going to do something.
"Alright, come on," Henry grabbed Shawn's hand to get him out of the bed.
"But it's so soft!" Shawn complained. He held on the the mattress.
"Okay then," Henry pried Shawn's hand off the bed and pulled him out. "Let's get you home. Which is your place these days? Isn't it the old Mee Mee's Fluff N' Fold?"
"Yeah," Shawn walked with his dad out of the small room he'd been confined to for the past few days. "I'm finally free, like a mole finally digging a hole outside."
"Yeah," Henry pulled him through the lobby and out of the door into the parking lot.
They got into the old yellow truck and began driving to Shawn's living space, which was only a short distance from the hospital.
"Okay Shawn, please, don't get yourself in a dangerous situation like that ever again, you got it?" Henry asked him.
"I'll try," Shawn said, but he had already defied that and he couldn't avoid it. He walked into his house.
He noticed some of his clothes were gone, but dismissed the unimportant thought when he saw a note on the table.
"New vehicle came into the department today. Blue Sedan. Get by eight in the morning tomorrow and leave at the place you got shot at."
