Derek was on Cloud 9, they had beaten the Bruins in a shutout, 3-0, the day before, and now he was going to teach Aiden a few tricks of the trade. He had asked Meredith if he could pick Aiden up from her house, seeing as she had surgery this morning. She had accepted gratefully and now he was drawing up to her house. He jumped out of his Porsche 911 RSR and ran up the steps to ring the doorbell.
"Hi," he greeted happily.
"Hey," Meredith replied, "Aiden is ready but he's just collecting everything together."
"Great. Good luck in your surgery."
"Oh, thanks. It's only a craniotomy, but it's nice having some independence in the OR." She smiled.
He grinned at her explanation, he could tell she was keeping a load of other comments in, probably for his benefit, but he could see that while ice hockey was his passion, surgery was definitely hers. He heard Aiden crash down the stairs, a backpack on his back, his stick trailing behind him. His massive Bauer kit bag was in the hall and Derek picked it up with ease. It was certainly lighter than his own kit!
"Derek! Let's go, I wanna learn to play really good," Aiden said.
"Well, we don't want to keep you waiting do we. I'll see you later Mer, I'll look after him until your shift ends," he offered.
"Thank you so much Derek," she sighed and hugged him awkwardly, the hockey bag in the way before he was tugged out of the door by the impatient 5-year-old. He threw the kit onto the back seat and told Aiden to sit in the front. He connected his Bluetooth and started the best playlist he had on his phone.
"This is such a cool car," Aiden admired.
"Thanks bud, I've always loved cars. I used to want to be a racing driver, but then I played hockey."
"Yeah hockey's definitely better," Aiden scrunched up his nose, just like his mother.
"Oh, this is a good song," Derek remarked, and turned up the car speakers. He moved to the beat as much as he could, and Aiden looked at him strangely.
"What music is this Derek?"
"It's The Clash, the best band you will ever hear, believe me," Derek convinced him.
"Okay," Aiden shrugged, and started bopping as well. Derek grinned and sang the words himself, "The Shareef don't like it, Rock the Casbah, rock the Casbah, The Shareef don't like it, Rock the Casbah, rock the Casbah."
By the end of the song, Aiden was singing along as well, and Derek loved that he could share all of this with him.
They got to the rink and padded up as quickly as they could and skated onto the ice. Derek had brought as many pucks as he could find and distributed them in the middle of the ice. Thankfully, the rink was up for reasonably cheap rent. He dragged the goals out from the store cupboard and put them in the right place, corresponding to the paint on the ice.
"Right then bud, are you ready to learn a few tricks of the trade," Derek asked.
"I was born ready!"
"Let's go then."
Derek led him through a warm-up and a few skating skills, likely ones that he had already learnt before, but he didn't complain. Then it got to the interesting part, shooting. He decided to take him through a few slap shots to start with. He got frustrated pretty quickly when they kept missing, but he soon realised the power he could get behind it and he just needed to try and fix his accuracy. Derek was amazed by his determination and watched him as he lined up shot after shot and practiced for as long as he could until finally Derek realized what time it was. He had rented it for 3 hours in case Aiden had enough energy, but at this point it didn't look like he was going to stop. Derek persuaded him off the ice and back to the car, "But I wanted to keep practicing Derek," he pouted.
