The bright summer sun rose above the treetops of a dense spruce forest. It's rays gently glided over a golden cornfield and slipped into the window of a young girl called Věra.

Once the the radiant light shone on her pale freckled face, her long lashes twitched and her big black eyes opened. A kind smile appeared on her thin rosy lips at the sight of such a beautiful morning. It was a perfect day to go out to the marketplace in the town centre.

But if she wanted to do so there was no time to lose as the house where she lived with her parents was quite distant from the centre and she wanted to be back for lunch.

So Věra promptly jumped out of bed, quickly combed her short ginger hair and still in her nightgown entered the dining room. She was the first to wake up that day so in order not to disturb anyone, she only grabbed one small redcurrant cake and a glass of water and took it back to her room.

While eating breakfast she read a bit of her favourite book- Pride and prejudice. She was a very romantic creature, so no matter how many times she has already read it, she was always so touched that a tear trickled down her cheek when she got to a moving part in the story.

After she had finished her cake and a chapter of the book, she put on a long white dress with a simple light blue floral design. She took her basket and purse with money, left a note for her parents and set out.
She exited the the rich but unkept garden of their house through a gate with a broken lock, which seemed closed but the slightest push made it burst wide open.

Věra passed by several of her neighbours on the street. She met Mr.Fialka with his wife, Mrs.Nová with her husband and newborn child and a pair of young teenagers that were having a date at the edge of the woods. While greeting them, she secretly envied their love and wondered what it would be like to have someone to care for her. She tried not to be jealous, but it was so hard. Being in a relationship with somebody is so beautiful. How she wanted to have a boyfriend! She longed for someone to share here most secret thoughts with, for someone who's hand she could hold when she was afraid, for someone to pray for before going to sleep.
She dreamed of a kind, good-hearted man who would respect her and adore her. She didn't need him to be handsome, but of course she wouldn't mind if he was. She only wanted him to have a strong personality, so that he could protect her and give her the sense of safety. She thought of this man each day. She loved him before she even met him and without having the smallest hope of meeting him sometimes in the future. And yet she was strong in her belief and was always prepared for encountering him. That's why she always wore pretty clothes, she wanted their first meeting to be perfect. So she attentively observed all the people that she saw just in case it was him. She was sure that she'd know him once she saw him. But it never happened and she waited and waited.

At least she had the image of him in her mind and no-one could take that away from her, if nothing else, she could at least think of him. And so she did. She thought of him while waking up, she thought of him while falling asleep and throughout the whole day. It soon became an obsession. She was no longer able to concentrate on anything else. He gave meaning to her empty life, he was the distant star that guided her on her way.
It seemed almost impossible that she could meet someone at least half as brilliant as him and yet it happened. When she left the block of houses where she lived, passed by the entrance to the forest and arrived at the turning of the road with a small yellow shed which was standing there for an unknown reason, she saw him.

He was slim, tall, strong and handsome. His tanned face was so gracious like of a god. He had short black hair that glistened in the sunlight. His eyes were dark and intelligent. It was nearly impossible to believe that he was standing right in front of her, but so he was.
Věra gasped and tried to conceal her excitement. It was him. Only a single look was sufficient to be assured of that. She felt as if she had known him for years. She wanted to run to him and embrace him at last, but luckily she held herself back and calmly walked past him. She desired to speak to him at last, but how to start? She couldn't tell him that he was the love of her life and that was the only thing she was able to think of at the moment, so she decided to leave it be. She was too timid.
