As Obsidian walked through the halls toward another day of mindlessly attacking targets, they heard a bit of a conversation between two of the experimenters discussing gems, the kind of creature everyone in this facility was.
"I was meditating with my friend the other day. You know Limestone?" The gem whispered. The woman she was talking to gasped and eagerly nodded. "We worked everything out just fine after we connected. We even fused for longer than a few seconds! We just needed to come to an understanding."
Obsidian just kept walking. Talk like that went around all the time. Gems going on and on about home and friends and duties. Obsidian would never have that. It was just Gold and Amazonite, and they only had each other. That would never change as long as they were here.
"We'll be out of here soon." Amazonite whispered reassuringly. Obsidian crossed their arms and stared at the ground.
"Shut up." Goldstone whispered back. Obsidian gave a small, involuntary shrug to match Amazonite's response.
They got to the testing room and went through their usual routine. Fire attack, water attack, repeat.
Water attack. The clear liquid flew through the air to smash a target.
We have to get out of here.
Fire attack. Another target burned and crumbled into charcoal and ash.
Where would we go?
Water attack.
We'll figure it out.
Fire attack.
I'm so tired of living like this.
Water attack.
Then let me get us both out of here.
Fire attack.
You don't even have a plan.
Water attack.
Yes I do, I just need an opportunity.
Fire att-
"Woah!" Obsidian yelled in surprise when the experimenter stepped in front of them. They waved away the fire just in time to not hit him.
"That's all for today. You may return to your room." The experimenter told them. They relaxed, then left. Back in their room, they laid on the bed once again. Outside the window, it was pitch black.
I'm so tired... Gold thought unhappily. Obsidian closed their eyes. I just want someplace where I can be free.
As Obsidian started to fade into sleep, Gold couldn't stop thinking about it.

"Hey! Wake up! Hey!"
Obsidian didn't recognize the voice, and figured it was some new gem there to replace yet another employee after another accidental shattering. They opened their eyes to see someone right over them. They panicked and sat up, but their forehead crashed into the strange gem's face.
"Ow..." Obsidian murmured, rubbing their head.
Amazonite, why didn't you wake us up?! Gold thought angrily. Then she opened her eyes and realized it wasn't Obsidian's hand on her face. She stared at it. A blackish-grey hand, darker in color than Obsidian's. Her gem was there on her right arm, as always, but half covered by a light grey sleeve instead of blue. Then she looked at her other arm and saw no gem. Amazonite's gem was gone. Gold's thoughts started to race. Amazonite? Blue Amazonite, are you there? Answer me! Are you mad that I said you don't have a plan? I'm sorry! Please just talk to me!
