Chapter One

I have been in solitary for five days now. I'm hungry, thirsty, tired, and scared. I was put into solitary for punching a guard. Let me tell you if you heard what the guards are thinking you would punch them too. My sentence was 11 days in solitary and 20 lashes with a whip, now I only have 6 days left but that still feels like an eternity.

I don't know what time it is. I can only tell from when the guard brings me water at 12:00 P.M. once a day. My back is sore but I'm used to it at this point. Solitary is a small concrete room with dim lighting and it's always freezing. There is nothing in the room, not even a mattress or a blanket for a bed.

I'm listening to the guard's thoughts outside of the room. It's the only entertainment I have, although most of her thoughts are blocked by the dampeners and from what I can hear it's nothing interesting.

I'm sitting in the corner of the room when I hear loud bangs and screaming. The door opens and the guard steps in with her gun out. She takes a step closer to me with the gun pointed straight at my head. I put my hands up, my powers are dampened so I can't do anything more than move pebbles around and teleporting is difficult without the dampeners so that's out of the question. She looks at my face and puts the gun away. She pulls out a tranquilizer and takes another step towards me. I put my back against the wall and feel pain surge up my spine. She takes another step closer. I try to make a run for it but she grabs my arm and injects the tranquilizer in it.

My arm goes numb and soon enough I'm on the ground. I see her run out and close the door. I'm lying on the ground not fully conscious and not entirely aware of what's happening around me. There is less noise now and it's taking everything in me not to completely lose consciousness. I hear walking in the distance and a female voice but I can't make out what she is saying and I'm too out of it to read her mind even if there weren't dampeners. The footsteps come closer and I can hear the voice more clearly but I'm too distracted trying not to pass out to notice what she is saying. I hear a door open and that's when I realize that someone has entered my cell.

I see a woman in a black combat suit walk up to me but her face is out of sight. She walks closer to me and puts her fingers on my neck. A few seconds later she removes her fingers and says, "I found a kid in one of the cells and she's still alive. I'm taking her in." I can feel her moving me but I can't keep myself awake any more and I fall into darkness.
