I remember the field very clearly. the mound had a hitch for the pitcher to put their feet on and their teammates cheering him on.
It was a tie. give or take. win or lose. it all depends on the pitcher , sawamura eijun. "go eijun!" He's teammates cheering was obviously making him more nervous but I couldn't do anything about it. this was his game. his teammates.
he bends his back backward , his hand with the ball in his glove above is head , his hell-bent facial expression as he uses all his force to push the ball straight to the catcher. his left feet stomped on the pitcher's base , his right hand was put into a 90 degree angle as his other hand with his glove was put straight in front of him , pointing to the catcher.
his cheek was puffed out as he threw the ball straight to the catcher , or more like he tried to. his ball was going to the catcher but the batter decided to swing although they were at risk and he scored his team a homerun.
sawamura's face was lost , dejected , as he pulled his cap further down to his face in shame. after all that big talk about winning and going to nationals , this is the show he puts infront of his teammates.
"koshien my ass." he mumbled and tears was streaming down his cheeks. It was quite obvious cause he put his cap infront of his face so no one would see he's tear-stained face. sawamura's teammates huddled together as they patted the pitcher on his back. giving a "you did well." , "you can do better next time." although the pitcher himself knew there was no next time with his teammates the next year.
the umpire called for both teams and told them to shake hands before the ceremony for the winning team. sawamura's team tears was full of sadness and disheartenedness facial expressions , while the opposing team tears was full of happiness and joy.
muli stood at the bleachers , back leaning on the fence separating the field and the audience , her face was twisted to the side as she didn't want them to look at her. for whatever reason ,
the sun was slowly saying goodbye to all of us as it setted , going back to its bed. the teams and the audience slowly dispersed to their own homes to eat dinner or to eat out.
muli took out her phone and checked the timing, 6.24pm. sawamura was still mourning with his teammates at the bus bay where the buses will take the students back to their schools.
today was a free day for me and my father told me about the match so I decided to come watch. "muli!" I turned around from the field and smiled at my father waving at me. skipping towards him , I linked arms with him and we both went to the car.
"so , did you enjoy yourself today?" my father reversed from the parking lot and into the hot sun I like to call summer. I leaned back onto the passenger seat as I stared from inside the car , looking at the stadium , remembering the boy from before. I haven't seen that determination in a long time and i would like to experience it once in my life.
baseball wasn't famous in china so there was less competitiveness , one of the reasons why my father retired from the baseball club.
" you know , the boy with the brown hair , his determined look actually makes me wanna start baseball again. I mean , of course not in china. like maybe go to a baseball club in school." I fidgeted with my fingers as my dad tapped the steering wheel , thinking about what i said.
My father has held a grudge against japan schools ever since his own experience in one. Thats why ever since we moved to japan , I've been homeschooled so i won't learn all the gangster signs and whatnot , even though i already learned all of those in china.
there was a long pause of silence before my father took in a breath , I was actually nervous about his response to my request because he actually doesn't want to enclose me from the word forever , he just thinks i'm too young to learn all these things when students my age or younger are already doing them.
" how are you going to get into the baseball club ? you do know that baseball is mainly for men in this country right ? how are you going to get your own equipments ? i know for damn sure there will be no sharing amongst the men in that sweaty locker room you have to share with them. and the transportation fees ? im not driving you to school every single day ... "
i deadpanned at my father questions . he's making it sound as if high school is gonna tear me apart. I put a hand up to stop my father from rambling and gave him a reassuring smile.
" i wont die once i step into the school pa. I will do just fine and this is my once in a lifetime chance to show my baseball skills ! the ones i learned from the best of course." i grinned at him and he gave me anime waterfalls in return.
I pushed his face away when he wanted to give me a hug. reminding him that he was still on the road , he swiftly continued our journey home.
"well , you're going to have to ask your mother for consent , not just me." he eyed me from the rear mirror and I sighed. Of course mother won't be happy about this.
