"why her?"

a chorus of children cheering echoed around the orphanage. one of the children were finally getting adopted. everyone in the house was happy for her. obviously, she was happy to be getting adopted aswell. Ritsu was beyond excited to get adopted, she had been dreaming for this day her whole life.

"Ritsu! let's play tag together, it is your last day after all!" one of the children exclaimed, wanting to play one final game of tag with the 8 year old girl.

"Alright, but let's play with a twist." every child looked at her with confusion, which made her giggle. "everyone will be 'it' except for me!" Ritsu concluded.

and with that, Ritsu ran into the big forest and thought it would be a good idea to go beyond the fence. she knew the other children would never find her.

everyone was having a hard time finding her, and some of them had given up.

Ritsu was sitting in the grass, right under a big tree, which gave her cool shade. She was positive she would win, until she heard some rustling from the bushes infront of her.

"Ritsu! i finally found you!" a girl her age exclaimed. [Name] was happy, knowing that she was the first one to find her best friend.

"AH! don't scream in my face, please. also, how did you even find me?" Ritsu tilted her head in confusion, until realization hit her. "oh, you broke mama's rules, huh?" she continued with a smirk.

Ritsu knew how much [Name] loved mama, so it was weird that she broke the rules of not going past the fence. but, then again, [Name] was always a troublemaker.

"um, did you forget that you broke the rules too? you're literally hiding in a restricted area." [Name] said dumbfounded.

"yeah yeah, whatever. anyways, do you... still wanna do it once you also get adopted?" Ritsu mumbled the last part.

this made [Name] giggle even more.

"of course! a promise is a promise after all."

Ritsu's face suddenly turned red, she had remembered what the promise was.

"okay but-" she was rudely interrupted by another 8 year old child, who was charging full speed towards the standing girl, [Name].

"HEY GUYS! I FINALLY FOUND YOU! THE OTHERS ARE- mfphyhg" [Name] quickly slapped her hand over her twin brother's mouth, already annoyed by his screaming.

Noya was [Name]'s twin brother, but he was almost the opposite of her. Noya was usually quiet and introverted, while [Name] was loud and outgoing.

"would you stop screaming? i get you're happy that you found us but no need to explode my eardrums."

"s-sorry, but anyways, mother told me to look for you both. you guys weren't doing anything.. weird out here, right?" Noya may be quiet, but he did speak his mind when he opened up.

"S-SHUT UP!" both girls yelled, making Noya jump back and almost falling on his butt.

"we'll be r-right there, and NO we were NOT doing anything "weird" out here." Ritsu said, while making quotation marks with her hands while she said the word 'weird'.

kinda fruity if you ask me.. Noya thought.

after a bit more of talking, Noya left, leaving Ritsu and [Name] alone.

"can we make another promise? it's always been a dream of mine but its kinda embarrassing..." [Name] said, while avoiding contact with Ritsu's yellow eyes.

"...alright, what is it this time?" Ritsu was genuinely curious, since they had already made promise when they were 6. but, she didnt question it and let her continue talking.

"when i get adopted too and we meet eachother outside, let's see the ocean together!" [Name] exclaimed, a little too excited to see the ocean.

she had heard about it before, in books of course. she thought it was amazing how it was full with salt and different creatures could still live in it. she had heard about mermaids, but she doubted they were real. still, she was fascinated with the different types of fish, she had sworn to herself that she would be a marine biologist, to explore the unknown.

[Name] snapped out of her thoughts when she heard Ritsu's laugh. the (h/c) haired girl tilted her head in confusion, then she came to the conclusion that she was somehow making fun of her dream.

"yes, of course we can see the ocean together! i think the ocean is really cool!"

oh.

OH.

[Name] smiled and pulled out her small pinky finger. she also motioned Ritsu to do the same.

"pinky promise?" [Name] asked, a soft smile adored her face.

"pinky promise." Ritsu assured.

Ritsu broke both her promises.

[Name] and Ritsu never got to see the ocean together.

and [Name] and Ritsu never got married.
