“Oh 213”

“Well, that’s funny. C’mon!” James said as he turned to the left and walked confidently in a direction he clearly knew well.

“Funny how?” He asked following after James.

“Because we are roommates! Well kind of. You’ll see. The thing is not many people are moving in this early, so it’s surprising to have a roommate right of the start”

“You moved in today?”

“Two days ago. Most people that are here this early live quite far away.”

“Aren’t you from Canada thought?”

“Yep, but I live way North.” He said as he stopped in front of a door with 212/213 sign on them.

Behind the door there was a small room that appeared to be a vestibule of sorts with 3 doors aside for the one they went through. Two with a number 212 and 213 respectively and one with a sign that read "bathroom".

“My room is 212. Bathroom is shared between four rooms, but I don’t thing the other two are occupied yet.” James said and seeing his confused look added “There are two entrances to it, one on this and one on the other side... Weird design but it works. Anyway, make yourself at home. I got to go get my laundry.”
With that James set the box he was holding down and Mark was left alone.

When he opened the door to the room
the first thing he saw was a large window facing the door with a view of the street and a small park on the other side. The main building of the University could be seen in the short distance, it’s roof towering over the trees. The sun was slowly setting and so the orange light made the boring beige walls a bit more welcoming.
Next to a wall there stood a single bed with a storage space underneath. There was also a wardrobe, a bookshelf, a chair and a desk with a basic lamp standing on it. Besides that standing in the corner was a small fridge.
Overall the room wasn’t big but quite cosy, a bit impersonal if anything, but that could be easily fixed Mark decided.
He carried his things in setting all of it on the yet unmade bed and started unpacking when he heard a knock on the door. Or more likely a door frame since the entrance still stood wide open.
He looked around and saw James standing there peeking in.

“You need any help unpacking?”

“Huh. And people say that a nice Canadian is a stereotype.”

“What?”

“What?” Mark said “I mean. I don’t have that much stuff with me, but if you’re offering”

Soon he realized that after you actually take everything out of is righteous place in any type of container it seems to be much more than you first anticipated, but with James's' help it took way less time than it would otherwise.

“Okay. Yes. It was a bit much. Thanks.” Mark looked around. But aside of books filling the shelf to a degree, a laptop resting on the desk with a bunch of equipment and a not yet filled cork board hanging over it the room didn’t change much and still felt somewhat alien to him. “Still looks boring. I think I have to get a plant or something”

“You’ll get used to it. Or more like the room will get used to you, the longer you live in it” Said James and thought for a moment “You could get LED lights. They make a big difference with little effort when they are on”

“Maybe. I'm still am waiting for one box though”

“Oh. You should have said. You left it downstairs?”

“Oh no. It was too big so I kind of send it here from Sweden. I didn’t think I’d be able to carry it with me with all the other stuff.”

“And you made a right call. You would have died on the stairs”

“I wouldn’t die! You caught me!”

“Butterfly effect. You’d have more stuff, walk slower. I’d already be upstairs when you were walking up”

“Oh my god” Mark gasped mockingly “I would have died on the stairs”

James gave it a chuckle and Mark looked at the window where the sun was low on the horizon already and the sky was turning greyish blue aside for some splatters of warm orange and pink light still tinting the clouds.

“You want to get some late dinner?” James asked and Mark turned his attention back to him “There is quite a few restaurants around the campus and I could show you around a bit”
