Kyle (p.o.v)
Audrey sat, her back to the window of the bus. She had come in late with barely enough time to load her bag's before we left, then walked right past me, ignoring my questions. She had gone straight to her cubby, picked up her flute, and gone to the bus. Now she sat one row in front me, head down, almost looking motion sick. I gave her a worried look, but she turned away, closing her ice blue eyes. Her smooth red brown hair lay across her shoulder's, and I thought of how much wilder it looked when we were running together. Why hadn't she shown up to run with me for the past week? I mean, sometimes she'd skip a day or two, but a whole week? Never.
My speculations where interrupted when our band director stood up at the front of the bus and called for our attention.
"We will reach Silverthorne in five minutes to get gas and allow all of you to get snacks. But you must be back before we leave at three thirty. That will give you twenty minutes.")
I leaned over the seat and tapped Audrey on shoulder, "Hey, do you want to get some hot chocolate with me?
"Maybe later" she replied drearily.
"Audrey, what's wrong? You know that you can tell me anything right?"
"Yeah, I know. I just don't want to talk about it"
"OK." I knew that she would probably tell me later. She usually did.
The bus screeched to a stop, and the kids started stampeding out.
"Well I guess I'll see you later then. Would you like me to bring you back something?" I asked, rising.
"No, I'm fine."
She stayed seated, knees to her chest. I continued up the aisle and was greeted by my friend Mike
"Hey man, You wanna come with us?"
"Sure." I said, then followed him and Peter out of the bus with a last glance in her direction.
Starbucks was right next to the gas station, so it was a quick walk. The line was super long, seeing as how we weren't the only people with the hot chocolate idea. By the time it was our turn to order we had only three minutes left til it was time to be back on the bus. Hot chocolate in hand, we made are way back. I looked up from my drink and saw Audrey walking down the side walk. As she neared the grass between the gas station and the Starbuck's parking lots, out of the blue, came a bicyclist racing down a steep slope at tremendous speed. He was headed right towards her from the rear! There was no way she would be aware of him in time to get out of the way.
"Audrey!" I cried out in warning.
Audrey looked up at me in surprise, but it was all ready too late! The bicyclist hit her in the side knocking her into the road. A surprised car stomped on it's brake's as Audrey was thrown into it's path. The car hit her almost head on, and she was thrown into the road, landing hard. I ran blindly toward her fallen form. I faintly heard Mike behind me, but all my focus was on Audrey. She was not allowed to be dead. "She can't be dead, she can't be dead" the words pounded in my mind. When I finally reached her, some other part of my brain registered the woman in the car and the downed bicyclist, but my focus was completely on Audrey. I turned her over. She didn't look like she was breathing, I pushed my fingers against the artery on her neck. No pulse! I tried desperately to remember the CPR I had learned in boy scouts.
"Call 911!" I screamed to Mike. Time seemed to race and stand still all at once. "She can't be dead, she can't be dead. Live Audrey! Live!"
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Mike dial 911. I began chest compressions. One, two, three, one two three. I plugged her nose and gave her the kiss of life. This was not the way I had envisioned our first kiss... I had planned on savoring the moment, with her in my arm's; not lying on the road dying!.... one two three, one two three. More mouth to mouth. "Live, Audrey, please Live!" I had to make her heart beat! Time passed. A pair of larger hands pushed mine away and continued the compressions, giving me a break. The large hands belonged to a tall, broad chested man with a day old goatee. One of the other customers from Starbucks I supposed. A small crowd had gathered. Most of the other band kids, the bus driver and around 15 other people surrounded the scene. Somebody had moved the bike off the fallen man. The woman in the car was taking deep breaths to calm herself. Just then the ambulance and the police arrived.
I was holding Audrey's wrist, searching for a pulse when I felt a hand on my shoulder. Paramedics in blue and white uniforms began to lift Audrey onto a stretcher while others helped the woman in the car. I turned to see that it was a police officer that had pulled me away.
"I'm afraid that's all you can to do for now son. The Medics will handle it from here."
I stood, allowing my self to be lead away, my eyes never leaving Audrey until they drove her away...
"Live Audrey. Please Live."
