Matt turned over the envelope in his hands again. He didn't trust himself to open it, too scared to see what was inside.
Adam had died from being hit by a car a couple months ago. Matt had seen it happen. He had gotten the license plate, had been able to help track the driver down.
The letter was probably a summons to a trial or something. Matt still didn't dare open it.
He had been lying on the floor for hours, staring at the envelope, at all it could mean...
His chest felt like it was caving in, like it was being pulled to the center of the earth. All he could think of was Adam. He had lost one of his best friends. He had watched him die.
The depression, the urge to hurt, swept over him again. He just wanted to sink into the floor and die. He couldn't stop reliving the moment, as he watched the car hit Adam, throw him to the ground, bloody him. All Matt could do was stare after the car, numbers and letters burning themselves into his mind. Only then did he move, rushing to Adam's side, already knowing it was too late.
Matt started to tear the edge of the envelope, then stopped. If there was going to be any sort of trial, he had to open it.
He quickly tore it open and pulled out the sheet of paper. It was asking him to show up for a statement, trial, blah blah.
He crumpled up the paper and threw it across the room, starting to cry.
