“Let’s take a long walk around the park after dark, find a spot for us to spark conversation, verbal elation, stimulation, share our situations, temptations, education, relaxations, elevations, maybe we can talk about Surah 31:18” -Jill Scott
Five years later, and Camilla is now a Senior at Lamar High. It took MUCH begging and pleading, but after her mother realized she wasn’t going to relent, she finally decided to let her daughter play basketball, since it clearly looked like she wasn’t going to follow in her footsteps like she hoped she would. Her only request is that if she was going to play basketball, she still had to maintain a feminine appearance. Just because she was playing a man’s sport doesn’t mean she had to look the part all the time. Camilla wanted to respond to that but she remained quiet because she didn’t want her mother to change her mind. She’s the captain of the basketball team and one of the best point guards the team has had, well since their last start point guard, Lotus McCall, graduated the year before. Now she’s a rookie over at the University of Houston.
It’s the last game before the championship, scouts from colleges all over the state and beyond are here in hopes of finding someone to recruit and Camilla is hoping she’ll be that one. She had been dominating the game, leading in points and assists, and she’s even had a few blocks, but after her last block, she got in her opponent’s face, earning herself a technical foul.
For what it’s worth, Camilla was a phenomenal player, she was the best anyone had ever seen, at that could be attributed to her intense love for Michael Jordan. She had pretty much studied his every move, learned them, and applied them to her own style of play, and it was working out in her favor. No matter what, she played to win, because losing was not an option. Unfortunately, for every strength, there was a weakness, and Camilla’s weakness was that she could be a bit of a hothead, and no matter how good she was as a player, when that side of her came out, it just overshadowed everything. She couldn’t help it, she was very passionate about the game, but right now, it wasn’t helping her in the least bit, because most colleges wouldn’t necessarily see that as passion, and wouldn’t exactly want that to be a part of their team.
Camila’s coach had sat her down and she responded angrily, because she knew the scouts were watching and this was one of the few remaining opportunities she had to show them her skills. She looked over at the door and saw Lotus, she was standing with a small group of her friends from college, but an even bigger group of girls and guys flocking towards her, either flirting or just wanting to be in her presence, but she wasn’t really paying them any mind. She watched as Lotus dapped up her friends before exiting the gym and she sighed deeply to herself.
Camilla and Lotus were together from the day after they first met until last year when they broke up because Lotus was going off to college. They were each other’s first everything, their first kiss, first love, first significant other, although, they were both still virgins, they wanted to wait until the time was right, but since they weren’t together anymore, apparently there never was a right time.
