(This story is inspired by the song “Achilles, Come Down”, and will use lyrics from the song)

Achilles

Achilles

Achilles come down, won’t you

Get up off

Get up off the roof?

When Theodore opened his eyes, he was reminded of the constant music ringing in his ears, the same as that of his soulmate. Standing up after a moment of listening, he tuned it out, focusing on getting ready for the day of school ahead of him. He slipped on the familiar uniform shirt and pants, feeling more uncomfortable than usual in the uniform. Theodore walked down the stairs, catching the eyes of his mother and stepfather, who walked up with big smiles and teary eyes. “Theodore.” He heard his stepfather’s voice ring out, stern and unforgiving. “You ready for the last day at this school?” Theodore nodded slowly, keeping his head down as he thought of how horribly this last day of high school could go.

Theodore entered the school, feeling the usual rush of anxiety enter him as he saw the crowded halls, and shivered as he thought of  so many people touching him. He took his usual back route to his English classroom, arriving before everyone else to make another letter he would never send. He sat down to write, finally hearing the song in his head play again

You're scaring us

And all of us

Some of us love you

Achilles, it's not much but there's proof

He chuckled quietly at the thought of Oliver, a crush of his, reading it and dismissed it, tucking the finished letter into his bag before settling in to wait the usual two minutes before the other students arrived in the classroom.

You crazy a-

A loud thump from the desk beside him and a grumbled "Teddy!" Caught his attention before the word finished, pulling his attention to his all-time best friend Lillith who pouted at him and gestured to his heavy bag, he noticed her girlfriend, Kate, laughing in the background at her antics. He picked it up while laughing as his best friend hopped on one foot while holding the other. She huffed angrily as she sat down at the desk, pouting over how he wasn’t speaking to her properly. “Seriously, you have to tell me your song! I could figure out who’s it is!” Theodore laughed softly, shaking his head no while waving her off. “I could probably find them on my own before you figured out the song.” She gasped dramatically, “Hey! I figured out mine pretty quick, Girl in Red is a pretty common band for a lesbian, especially Girls!” Theodore laughed slightly, snorting at Lilith’s annoyed tone, and goes to talk back to her, but the teacher cuts him off.

The teacher clapped her hands to gain our attention, “Since today is our last day, we will not be doing any work, and instead will be writing down our songs. Once you have it down, we will be passing them around this classroom, and then in your next class, you will pass it around there-” He saw Lilith smirk at him teasingly out of the corner of his eye and focused back on the teacher. “-If its found that you do not write down your song, or you don’t find your soulmate here, they will be sent in a box to a different school to see if someone there has your song.” The teacher scanned the room before picking a person to pass out paper, the kid’s name Theodore hadn’t bothered to remember, but he thanked him anyway for the slip of paper. He then focused back on his song and began to think of the name.

Remember your virtues

Redemption lies plainly in truth

After a moment, he remembered the title of the song, Achilles, Come Down, had been its name. He took a moment to soak in some more of the sad lyrics and relate to them.

Just humour us

Achilles

Achilles come down

Won’t you get up off

Get up off the roof

He printed it down, using his neatest handwriting, and wrote his name underneath. He then folded the slip in half and wrote his name again on the front. He then dropped the slip of paper into the plastic bucket the teacher was passing around silently and went back to writing another note to Oliver, flushing slightly at the second thought of xem reading one today.

Achilles

Achilles

Achilles come down, won't you

Get up off

Get up off the roof?

He heard the bell go off and pushed the note into his palm, walking down the hall as silently as possible. He felt someone bump into his arm, “Sorry..” he mumbled as he continued to walk, not noticing the absence of the note in his palm before he got to his class. He anxiously waited through his second class, opening each small note without seeing his song or Oliver’s name. Third period was called soon enough, and that’s when he realized his note, was gone and no longer in his palm. He checked his bag while walking, and dropped another one, he realized it, but it was knocked away from him before he could grab it. He rushed off to his class, feeling sick as he realized he now had two notes to Oliver loose in the school, and both were signed with his full name.

The self is not so weightless

Nor whole and unbroken

Remember the pact of our youth

Where you go

I’m going

So jump and I’m jumping

Since there is no me without you

Soldier on

Achilles

Achilles come down

Won’t you get up off

Get up off the roof

He sat through third-period worrying and both wandered and sat in his fourth the same way. When lunch hit, he ran over to Lilith and Kate at their usual lunch table where Lilith was messing with their matching blue shell necklaces, “I accidentally lost two of those notes.”
