This part of Gaia never grew colder than now, and Merena relished the feel of the sunshine on her face. The dazzling pale blue sky matched the eyes staring up at it then they turned toward the village in the distance. Quickly, she transformed and walked for the horse corral keeping a wary eye on the villagers. Soon the words came that she feared, hunters. Without hesitation, Merena released the horses and hid within them. Merena urged the horses into a galloped and ran with them.
"There! There she is!" yelled a hunter pointing at a black mare.
"Get her before she escapes!" exclaimed Hunter Geoff.
"Oh no," whispered Merena for her own ears.
"Watch out! Don't let her get away!" ordered Hunter Geoff.
After she entered the tree line, the horses dwindle down until she ran by herself. She leaped around like a Zandorian stag avoiding arrow after arrow. Finally, she evaded her would-be captures, and her hooves slowed on how often they hit the ground. The woods grew an eerie silence; not even a bird chirping brought Merena's nerves on edge eyes darted, and her hooves quickened their steps. With a soft whistle, an arrow buried into a tree, and she ran then jumped over shrubs.
"Don't kill her," ordered Geoff as he hit the hunter, which made the arrow miss the target.
Soon a cry escaped her mouth as she jumped over a shrub, and her body landed against the ground with a thud. Air departed from her body after hitting the ground, then her limp body rolled down the incline. Her body made a splash when it hit the water.
"Let's get my prize men," commanded Geoff.
When they halted their progress where she disappeared, the group dismounted from their steads. Geoff peered over the hillside instantly, his eyebrows connected together.
"Where did she go?" asked Terrence.
"She must have gone in the river. Go find her," demanded Geoff.
Quickly, the group ran down the hill into the river. They searched the river's banks for any sign of her.
"There are no signs of her," reported Terrence.
"Send men out to find her. Not just down the stream but upriver also," ordered Geoff.
Further downriver, Merena dragged her body from the water and collapsed on its bank. She stared at the arrow protruding out of her shoulder soon; the darkness claimed her.
A voice intruded into the darkness, then her eyes fluttered, and she tried to focus on the person. She jerked when the man's face focused in her brain.
"Shhh. You're okay," whispered the man so gentle that she lost the fight within.
"I need to check your wound. It will hurt," indicated the man, then she nodded her head.
He continued, "I know what you are. You can talk."
"Name?" asked Merena.
"Henry. I'm a doctor," answered Henry.
"Oh. Hello Henry," said Merena.
"It isn't too deep, but I don't have a way to get it out. I'll get help to get you to my village," conveyed the man as darkness reclaimed her.
Soon the sensation of floating came over her then she heard the commotion of a village. Blankets covered her body while a little boy talked and rubbed her jowl as she still moved. She saw the tender brown eyes of the boy after her eyes opened.
