Jennifer arrived,at exactly 10:30am.Emily was excited. She said goodbye to everyone.Jennifer looked stunning that day,in a baby pink Chanel blouse and high waisted white jeans. She and Emily walked out of the front door of the Children's Home.Emily gaped at Jennifer's Porsche.
"Ready?"
Jennifer drawled, opening one door.Emily nodded, mute. She got in.The leather felt amazing compared to the grimy seats in Martie's van.Jennifer put on her Ray Bans as she started up the engine.
"We might get a meal.Anywhere you like?"
Jennifer said as the car pulled out of the Children's Home.Emily beamed.
"Oh!Cool.I don't mind.I'm easy to please."
"Well,we'll see on the way."
Jennifer turned on a CD as Emily thought more.
"So,where do you live?"
Emily asked.Jennifer looked sympathetic.
"Well,LA.Which is quite far.So we're going to stop on the way."
Emily was curious. Why would Jennifer drive six hours to Sacramento to adopt her? They drove for an hour, until Jennifer suddenly pulled over.
"You look bored.Maybe this will help."
She pulled out a new iPhone, still in the box and handed it to Emily.Emily opened and closed her mouth like a fish.
"Ohmy....I've never had a cell before."
The next hour or so was bliss.Until Jennifer opened her lipsticked mouth.
"So,Emily.Because this is a new life, what about a new name?"
"What?!"
Emily turned off the IPhone. For a minute, there was silence, apart from the whir of the engine and the click of the phone.
"Well...I don't know.Emily's just so...common."
Emily's heart raced.Cool!A new name!A new name......But it was weird..
"Yeah.I always used to pretend to be called something else when I was younger..."
"What about Summer?"
Summer. The perfect name for a pretty peppy cheerleader that wore floral patterns. Not the name for Emily. She felt uncomfortable.Something was wrong-She knew it.
So why did she say yes?
