We were all sitting in a triangle. We were with each other yet were texting using the group chat and making no noise. In the middle of the hallway, by a grandfather clock, Grace, Riley and I sat.
As the hours ticked by, slowly, to slowly, so that it seemed like forever. I closed my eyes, and when I opened them I was no longer laying on Grace's legs but on the wooden floor.
Suddenly aware that my friend was missing, I sat up and carefully moved Riley so they could stay asleep. I stood, and looked in the hallway, in the shadows where Grace might be hiding. I searched the entire house, my great-grandmothers room, my great-great-grandmothers old room, the bathroom, the living room, the kitchen, and downstairs in the basement in all of the rooms down there... No Grace.
I stopped and stared out into the woods that were in the backyard. "Maybe.." I thought. I opened the door and made sure it wasn't locked to where I could go out but not in, and left the old house, walking straight into the woods on the old path.
After walking for what seemed like a hundred years, I found a clearing. In the clearing was Grace... And a smoky figure. My eyes widened when I realized they were talking. And who the smoky figure was. "Hey! Get away from her! Your fight is with me, not her you leave my friends out of this." I yelled and the smoky figure turned towards me. "But your friends are interesting my dear, and are you sure they are your friends? Watch carefully you might be wrong." He said.
I stopped in my tracks. What did he mean by "are you sure they are your friends" and "watch carefully you might be wrong"? I looked at Grace who seemed in a trance, the figure still looking at her. Slowly the forest, the figure, everything around me disintegrated before my eyes.
Now I was on a mountain top, Grace was there to and we were alone. But Grace was in a tornado, wind swirling around her and whipping me as it spinned. Our phones clutched tightly in our hands, I looked at my screen and saw tears stained my face- why? I looked back at Grace, and saw a single tear fall. She was visibly weak, and getting weaker by the second, threatening to topple over any minute.
I screamed, so loudly I heard the noise of breaking glass, and I looked down and saw my phone screen shattered. Tears were coming in steady flowing streams now, my hands tightly clenched into fists, my phone lay forgotten on the ground as I watched my friend turn into blue light and fade away.
And then it was silent. I was all alone.
