When we arrived at Finch Labs after leaving Neville at the hospital, McMillan, Harry and I sprinted into the reception where multiple employees sat. All of them either bruised, injured, bleeding or petrified. Almost everybody from the precinct were standing in a crowd around the Sheriff who seemed to be barking orders. We joined the crowd, pushing our way to the front. Umbridge's gaze landed on me and I flinched. Her glare made my skin crawl uncomfortably.
"Weasley, Potter. About time you got here. I'm sorry to say that Deputies Johnson, Paige and Zelmen have suffered the worst of today. But we aren't done yet. I want everybody loaded up, stun guns only. The Head scientist has made it specifically clear that they can't afford to loose any of these specimens. We go in there, knock it out and get out. Details are as follows. Got it?" Umbridge snarled and everybody nodded, replying with an aggressive, "Yes, Sheriff". I frowned.
"I don't mean to speak out of turn, Sheriff, but I don't think it'll be that easy. The Specimen's already killed three of our Deputies. As much as it's not human it-he has feelings.... And-and emotions. He may have lost his memory but he's smart."
I stated, instantly regretting it. Everybody stared at me, either confused or shocked.
"He's right, Sheriff," said a voice and suddenly Dr McLaggen came into view, his fancy clothes and lab coat damp and slightly bloody. The lines on his face had changed, making him look much older than he seemed to be. "What, pray tell, do you mean, Doctor?" Umbridge asked in a high pitched, brittle voice and McLaggen sniffed. "As far as we're concerned, especially after the events of this morning, nobody is going into that room and getting out alive." He said and the air around everyone tensed. "Deputy Weasley will go in alone, draw the creature out of the water and someone can take the shot from our overhanging platforms." He suggested and Umbridge frowned, so did the other Deputies. "Is there a reason Weasley has been specifically chosen for this expedition?" She asked and a cold chill ran up my spine. Harry shared a glance with me and I knew this wouldn't end well.
"I trust his judgment," McLaggen stated and I stared at him, his eyes boring into my own. McLaggen then turned to Umbridge and they shared a look I couldn't place. Understanding flew between them and I frowned. What type of agreement did they have?
It was obvious that McLaggen had said something to spook the Sheriff when he asked for permission to take me out of work yesterday. What had he said to her?
"Very well then. Deputy Weasley will go in. McMillan, I want you standing on the overheard platforms with the Doctor. Keep us informed of everything happening." The Sheriff stated stiffly. She then turned to me with an aggressive fire in her eyes. "Weasley. I'm giving you five minutes. No less, no more. If anything goes wrong, McMillan will call. We'll be right outside." She said and I nodded, my chest heaving.
We all walked through the hallways, combat boots thundering past metal doors, down the elevator and soon we were standing before the door I had refused to look back at just the day before when I mentally swore to myself I'd never come back.
Harry nudged me. "Alot can happen in five minutes, Ron," he whispered and I nodded, taking in a large breath.
"That's what I'm afraid of..."McLaggen slid his card through the card reader and it beeped. The door opened gracefully. He gave me a pointed look before dragging Ernie up the stairs with him towards the platforms where observations could be made from further away. I closed my eyes, sighed and walked in. The door shutting behind me.
The room was a mess. Papers were strewn across the floor. Blood littered the walls and the bucket of fish I had used yesterday had spilt into the large tank which was tinted red.
"Blaise?" I called.
Water splashed around the tank and a dark figure rose out the water. Blaise stood before me, eyeing my gun with resentment. I took it off my holster, made sure the safety was on before tossing it to the side. Holding my hands up in peace.
"You said you weren't coming back," he whispered. His gaze menacing. I gulped. Not out of fear... but guilt. "And you said goodbye on the island. Now look where we are," I chided, a tired laugh sounding out of my mouth. I thought I saw even the slightest trace of a smile on his sharp edged features. But all he did was stare.
"Why did you kill them?" I asked him. Blaise merely shrugged. "They were trying to hurt me. Sticking metal in me. I haven't been able to shift in days because of them. But most importantly, they weren't you," he replied and my mouth fell ajar. I pursed my lips and took a few steps toward him until I was so close our breaths synchronized.
"You attacked Hermione and you hurt Draco. You even tried to drown me. So why can't I stay away from you?" I whispered, my voice quivering. My hand nonchalantly found his cheek. My palm felt warm against his face. As if it belonged there. Like a puzzle piece. Blaise stared at me with confusion. Come to think of it, he had no clue of all the things he'd done. He didn't remember anything that happened before he was taken. He forgot about Mage island, he forgot about Pansy and Theodore. But he didn't forget about me...
"You may not be my human. But I am your mer,"
A small gasp escaped my mouth and I stared up at him with wide, glossy eyes. He took my hand off his cheek and held it tightly before placing it flat against his toned, damp chest.
"I am yours,"
I didn't have any time to react before I was on my tippie toes and our lips connected. At that very moment, I felt the immense amount of stress I'd gone through the past few weeks dissappear as I relaxed against his body, pushing myself closer to him. He obliged and snaked his arms around my waist. We moved in sync with each other. His lips enticing every muscle in my body. One of my hands wrapped around his neck. The other still pressed up against his chest.
The world around us blurred.
It was just me and him in our own little world where scientists weren't experimenting on him, Hermione and Draco weren't hurt and I wasn't at risk of loosing my job, and possibly my mind.
And as much as I hated the thought, I wanted more...
I wanted to stay in the moment forever. To feel his body against mine for the rest of my life. His lips left mine after what felt like long, lustfull hours and he smiled, opening his eyes to stare at me. But he wasn't glaring. There was no pain or resentment in his eyes. Only two deep, rich chocolate fountains that I never wanted to look away from.
Suddenly, something made a muffled noise and Blaise flinched in my grasp. His eyes fluttered before he hell out of my arms and onto the floor with a thud.
My eyes widened and I stood completely still.
One at a time, tears fell from my eyes, down my freckly cheeks and into my uniform.
The door to the tank room opened loudly and scientists and officers alike ran inside, taking Blaise away from where he lay near my feet. I watched as they strapped his hands and feet down onto what resembled a metal stretcher and wheeled him out. I wanted to say something. I wanted to do something. I wanted to stop them.
But all I could do was let the tears fall as people bustled, shouted and worked around me.
Harry put a hand on my shoulder, staring at me with concern as I continued to gaze at the door.
"Ron?" He whispered.
A croaky chuckle came out of my mouth. My tears flowing harder than they had been.
"Alot can happen in five minutes,"
Because in that short amount of time I realized that from the moment I met Blaise early that morning on the docks in Mage Island to the moment he called himself mine-
I'd fallen in love...
