chapter dedicated to cuddleysoftbear and nvptxne

𝐄𝐒𝐌𝐄 was walking towards the door, too terrified to face her fears, herself. As she stared into the mirror, all she saw was herself but with glowing green eyes and fiery solar powers on her fists. The makeup on her face had been painting on with her tears that refused to stop flowing for the past few days and the red puffy eyes that would make a panda jealous, were now barely noticeable to her and she gulped painfully as she stared at the reflection of herself. It was said that the greatest inventions are created out of necessity and Esme Doucouré had definitely faced hers.

She couldn't control her powers anymore. Through her cracked reflection, all she saw was the monster that killed the boy that gave her first kiss. Her own reflection said that she was, in fact, a monster.

She was disgusted with herself and every time she saw her hands, she couldn't help but feel like they were just in the way. Like as if there were two additional appendages that she didn't need. As if perhaps they were just an accident for being born or a curse from someone up there.

In her own words, she was a burden, an abomination of nature and a symbiote, every little synonym that she could come up with at the top of her head had at least three common meanings, a strange, disgusting creature who caused people's problems. She couldn't just tell her parents about the incident, people would just leave her behind which she was used to.

Through that mirror, she saw every flaw, every imperfection, and defect in her reflection. Everyone in school would eventually find out what happened and there was no running away from it. She felt imprisoned in her own mind prison where she was held prisoner and her dark thoughts were trapping her whole. Her thoughts were interrupted by large steps coming towards the hallway of her bedroom.

She wore a confused expression as those steps were unusually loud but she didn't think anything of it. Two minutes later, the large steps return but including hammering sounds towards the walls. This set off a red flag for Esme as this wasn't just anything. Esme went under her pillow and took out a knife and took small footsteps at a time.

Once, she was close to her bedroom door, she opened the door as quietly as possible as she didn't want whoever or whatever was in her house to find her and kill her. As soon as she had made it to the hallway outside of the bedroom, she changed her ways and began crawling. Every minute she heard the loud sounds, she took that as an opportunity to hide. She had to protect her 14-year-old self and her asleep parents in any way possible. Surprisingly, the sounds stopped, giving Esme a sense of relief, but it didn't let her guard down.

She inhaled her breath before exhaled it before wearing a smile on her face. She began walking towards the stairs of her living room. As she began walking downstairs, she felt her smile drop as she felt someone behind her. That someone pushed her down the stairs causing Esme to roll over the stairs painfully.
