We made our way back home, my mind still trying to process what just happened. Megan stayed silent the whole way back which irked me. Where did that bout of courage come from? I'm not upset about the interaction. More like betrayed if I'm being honest. I spent the whole time trying to hide her from Ada, but all my worry and efforts went to waste in the end. If she didn't mind in the first place, why didn't she tell me?
We passed the grocery store I always go to and I thought to myself I might as well go grocery shopping since I'm already here. Plus this would be a good distraction from my thoughts.
"I'm gonna buy food," I told her, my tone flat. "You're welcome to head back." I reached into my pocket and handed her the keys. Megan looked at me curiously, wondering why there was a change in my mood.
"I'll come with you," she replied.
"You do know that people are looking for you, right? What if someone recognizes you?"
She didn't answer. Only pulled her cap down to cover her eyes once again and I had to fight back a smile. As if that would make a difference.
"What are you smiling about?" she questioned. I wasn't expecting her to notice. Wasn't her cap blocking her view?
"It's nowt," I replied. "D'ya wanna wear my sunglasses?"
I unhooked my sunglasses from my shirt and handed it to her. She reached for them and placed them on her face. They were too big for her small face but they covered her eyes and face nonetheless.
"How do I look?" she asked, looking around.
"Unrecognizable," I joked and she laughed.
I forgot to check the fridge before leaving. Actually, I didn't forget; I hadn't planned on stopping by in the first place but luckily Megan knew what to buy. She grabbed a trolley and quickly made her way towards the produce department. She looked like she knew what she was doing so I left her to it, buying things I knew I needed like bread and milk.
I wasn't the type to plan my meals; I don't have the discipline for it but it looked like Megan did. She probably did all the grocery shopping, planning, and cooking for Ada. I can see why they're fond of one another. Ada probably saw her as her own daughter. Someone to fill the void when her real daughter wasn't home.
I put my stuff in the trolley and watched her. She was struggling with the sunglasses. It was hard to see so she'd remove them slightly, peer at the produce, and put the sunglasses back in place. I admit wearing sunglasses indoors is an odd thing to do but it was dead funny, especially when it was someone else. After she was done, we moved onto the meat department. The trolley was full. I wasn't used to buying this much food.
"D'ya need shampoo or anything?" I questioned.
I nodded my head at the aisle, encouraging her to buy what she needed. I wasn't sure if there were any feminine products she needed. She walked down the aisle, buying the things she needed and then we paid for our stuff. Our hands were full of carrier bags but we managed to make it to the flat without dropping anything. That was until we got to the door and I had to get my keys out of my back pocket. I reached behind my back not wanting to put the bags down but struggled to get the keys out.
"Everything okay?" Megan asked.
"Yeah. Just being lazy not wanting to put the bags down. Just gimme a second."
"I'll get it."
Before I could register what was happening, she grabbed the keys from my back pocket in one swift motion and unlocked the door. I found it hard to believe this was the same woman who was terrified a month ago. She pushed the door open and stepped in, leaving me standing there in shock. Moments later, she poked her head back out and asked if I was coming, causing me to snap out of my trance.
