Sam woke up at seven o'clock sharp that morning so she'd have time to get ready, and maybe even go to the pool before the class left for their first trip. Madeline was up already, and reading something in a little chair by the window. Maddie? Reading? Sam was surprised.

She gathered her things and slipped into the bathroom. There, she unbraided her hair and quickly brushed through it before sticking it right back up in a bun. Sam pulled on a bathing suit, some pink shorts, and a thin white top. She looked at her reflection in the mirror. Well, if she was going to go swimming, there was no point in make-up. So she strode back out into the main room, grabbed her sunglasses from the top of her luggage, and put them on top of her head.

Madeline stood up from her chair and took a look at her friend. "Are you going somewhere?" she asked.

"Yeah, I was on my way to the pool. You coming?" Sam said

Madeline made a face. "Um, of course I'm coming!" she exclaimed.

Sam waked over to the chair Madeline had been sitting in. "Go change. I'll wait," Sam instructed

"Awesome," Madeline shouted, dashing around to get her things. She disappeared behind the bathroom door, emerging hardly a minute later. She wore a loose off-the-shoulders tee shirt and a pair of denim shorts, blonde hair down around her face. She picked up her huge movie-star sunglasses and put them on like a headband.

"Well? Are you coming?" she said, sliding her feet into neon yellow flip flops.

"Yep," Sam replied. She stood and marched toward the door, grabbing her own navy blue shoes on the way out.

They felt the warmth of the day as soon as they stepped outside into the early sun. There weren't many people swimming at this hour, so Sam and Madeline found seats easily. Even though it wasn't past seven-thirty in the morning, it was already unusually warm out, and humid, too. Good for hanging out at the pool, anyways.

Neither girl jumped into the clear, pearly water of the pool as soon as they got there. They took a seat on two of the many lounge chairs scattered around the pool deck and relaxed, feeling the warm sun on their backs.

"I wish I could do this every day," Madeline sighed, leaning back in her chair and closing her eyes peacefully."

"Oh, I know," Sam agreed. She was silent for a moment. "My mom used to love days just like this."

Madeline turned to look at her friend, carefully assessing her face. Sam didn't look particularly upset- at least not like she had when her mother had first disappeared.

Sam was long used to the idea that one of her parents was gone. She didn't want to think about it right now. This, right here, was paradise. What else could she ask for?

It was like Madeline had read her thoughts and promptly changed the subject. "You know what the only think that could possibly, ever make this better is?"

"What?" Sam asked, only half listening.

"A boyfriend would be nice. Don't you think?"

"Mmm hmm," Sam said, only hearing Madeline's voice, not the actual words.

Madeline smiled at nothing in particular, maybe her imagination. "Who do you like?"

Sam restrained from rolling her eyes. The famous question, asked at every sleepover when playing a G rated version of truth or dare, the one that nobody ever wanted to answer... and then did anyways, giggling all the while. She said nothing.
