Chapter 5: Early Mornings and Regrets
On the next day, I was awake unusually early. Too early in fact that the sun hasn't risen yet. I groaned and tried to return to my blissful sleep but no matter how still I was or how long I closed my eyes I was still unable to fall back to sleep. Giving up, I threw the dark gray blanket to the side and turned, placing my feet lightly on the cold floor.
I stopped for a second to listen to my surroundings. Only one person was sound asleep. Grabbing my silk robe, I wrapped it around me and tied it tightly. Swiftly, I ran downstairs to find Elijah holding Hope. I gulped then looked away.
"Lovely morning," Elijah commented. I ignored him, taking a mug and preparing my morning blood.
"I have already prepared it," he appeared beside me and with one hand poured some for me.
I snatched it from him making sure it wouldn't spill and our fingers brushed against each other. I looked up and he was looking at me with a distant look in his eyes. I cleared my throat and directed my gaze at Hope.
I felt my heart soften at the sight of her. Before I turned away she smiled at me and I reminded myself once again I should return to my priority.
By now, the sun was making it's way behind the clouds. Hoping to have some time alone, I stepped outside and finish my blood. The sky was a light purple and blue color now. Admiring it, I sighed. Interrupting my thoughts, I heard another set of feet walking down the stairs. Rushing back inside, I found Camille boiling water for her coffee.
"Good morning," she attempted on being kind. I feel as if it was genuine so I smiled and greeted her a good morning also.
"What is it with you guys?" Camille said as Elijah walked into the kitchen. He had changed from a shirt and a pajama bottom to a suit. We looked at her, confused. She poured her coffee into a mug and frowned. Camille pointed to her bed head then pointed at us. I glanced at Elijah who was now putting his tie on. And he was looking at me, in a silk robe and barefoot. Then we realized what she was talking about, Elijah looked stunning in a classic suit and my hair wasn't even disheveled even thought I had just woken up moments ago.
"Being a vampire has it's benefits," I shrugged and she raised her eyebrow, nodding. Then she walked off silently to look for Hope who was located in the living room.
Knowing the day of watching over Hope, Camille and Elijah have officially begun. I climbed up the stairs and jumped into the shower, brushed my teeth and changed into more decent clothing, which consists of dark skinny jeans, a black sweater and low boots.
I met with my housemates in the living room. Camille putting Elijah through therapy and the discussed something I tried to block out. He must have not heard as I stopped in the corner not in sight. Then I heard Hayley's name and listen carefully, holding my breath. He talked about how much he cares for her and I gulped. I shut my eyes tightly; I shouldn't be listening to this.
So slowly, I emerged from the corner and appeared before them.
"What's your plan today?" I asked as I sat across Elijah.
"I was planning on taking Hope to the park," Camille picked up Hope. I nodded and when Camille got up so did I.
"Alessandra, I believe that it is unnecessary accompany them to the park," Elijah crossed his muscular arms. My hair that was tucked behind my ear had fallen and I peeked at Camille under them. She smiled and nodded.
"You can stay here with Elijah," she passed by me and squeezed my shoulder. I wanted to protest but I knew I couldn't. Elijah and I haven't truly been alone. I froze because I didn't want to admit that it sounded great but also didn't want to speak up. Camille grabbed her bag and gently placed Hope into a stroller before walking out of the house.
"Just you and me now," I mumbled and we stared at each other for quite sometime. He cleared his throat and stood up, suddenly beside me.
"I'm sorry I hadn't checked on you that night of the..." Elijah didn't finish. I nodded, knowing exactly what he was talking about. He continued with his apologizes. "I'm sorry I hadn't tried to look for you," he breathed out. "Especially when you were looking for me," he looked down.
"Life happens, it's the past this is the present you know," I shrugged. "Besides whatever happened before doesn't matter anymore right?" I choked out.
"I wish I had known sooner," his voice full of regret as he cupped up face with his hands.
"Me too," I whispered before moving his hands, stepping to the side and walked passed him.
When the morning turned to the afternoon, Elijah's phone rang. I stopped what I was doing, reading my book and listened.
"Rebekah's home," Klaus said, sounding relieved.
"I'm on my way, Alessandra is capable of watching over Camille and Hope in the meantime," he implied and hung up.
Without saying a goodbye, he opened the front door and I ran after him.
"Where are you going?" I asked, pretending I hadn't heard his conversation.
"Home, I'll be back in a couple days," he said before climbing into a car and driving off, leaving me by myself looking after him as the car disappeared. I sighed and leaned my head on the pillar.
