Part 5

He's already here when I walk outside in the back of the garden this morning. My parents are drinking coffee and Nan is cutting a fresh, juicy watermelon which I grab a slice of when I join them. We all exchange our 'good mornings' and mum asks us if we had a good time at the barbecue last night. I describe the beautiful lake house and delicious food we had, leaving out the details of our passionate encounter.

Mum and dad leave shortly after to sort out some business matters and now it's just us three. Nan asks us to buy some bread for the boiled greens she's making for lunch. As Negan and I walk to the bakery, I notice he looks deep in thought. And it feels like there's a tension between us but I might be making it all up. "What's up?" I turn to him, furrowing my eyebrows.

He stops walking and faces me. "Nothing, Mel. I just want to clear something up so I know we're on the same page. Last night was a one time thing and can never happen again. I hope I didn't give you the wrong impression."

It feels like a stab in the heart but I can't say I wasn't expecting it. I'm not an idiot. It's not like we're going to ride into the sunset together and live happily ever after. It's just, he made me feel things I didn't know I could and his words reminded me that nothing is permanent. I'm eventually going to follow my own path and he'll leave Kefalonia, and the memories we made together will be of the past. And I'm not just referring to last night's incredible fuck.

"Yeah, I figured. Don't worry, I wasn't expecting anything more from you. It was a fun night, but that's all it was. One night" I smile at him, and his body seems to relax a little. My phone starts ringing and the caller ID lets me know its Sophia and I answer it.

"Mel, hey! I was just talking to Artemis and she's throwing a party at hers on Friday. Johnny mentioned you were off on that day, so it would be awesome if you joined us!"

"Sounds great Soph! Will you guys be picking me up on the way? What time do I need to be ready by?"

"Yeah, we'll be at yours at 7:30. Alex will be driving. But anyway, onto more important things..You still haven't told me who that hottie was that picked you up the other day. I saw him walk from your house to his bike and then when Johnny came back to the car, he told us everything. He seemed a little upset actually." Sophia said teasingly. Negan in the meantime was getting the bread from the bakery as I waited outside.

"He's no one, just my dad's friend visiting from America. I've just been showing him around places." I reply. I feel my cheeks heat up and I'm not sure if it's from the sun or the fact that she brought him up. Negan returns to my side and I quickly end the call. We walk back in silence, not being able to think of anything to say to him.
