To spread the message of Allah, Prophet Mohammed (Peace and blessings be upon him) decided to go to Taif and teach the people there about Islam. And He (the Prophet) very well knew that the people of Taif were no different from people of Makkah. But He didnot dispair.
As He entered Taif, and proclaimed his Prophet-hood, people jeered at him. One among the people said "Did Allah not find anyone else for his message except you?" Another said, "I must be naive or a thief if I believed you to be a prophet" And it went on.
Then in order to prevent him from preaching Islam, people of Taif set a group of children and vagabonds behind him. They threw stones at him, injured him. Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings be upon him) was profusely bleeding in such a way that He was soaked in his blood!
He (the prophet) escaped from the town. Tired, forsaken and wounded, he sought refuge in a nearby garden and prayed to Allah.
While he was sitting there, an angel (Jibraeel) along with angle of mountains came to the prophet and said, "O Prophet of Allah! If you order us then we will grind the people of Taif between the two mountains."
But glory be to Allah, The Prophet said, "I am sent as the Prophet of mercy and not to punish people" He further said, "I hope that children of these people will serve Islam." That was the character of our Prophet who even forgived the people who harmed him and that was his mercy.
