A girl's footsteps echoed in a seemingly empty household. The chill in the night air sent shivers down her spine despite multiple missions in freezing weather.
Her arms wrapped around her in uneasiness and her eyes dart around, trying to sense if there's any danger. She walks past a Fusuma, a traditional Japanese sliding door, only to pause and take a look at it. It looks familiar. Drawn to it, she walks toward the doors until she's in front of it. Slowly, painfully slowly, she slid open the door. She stared at the image in front of her, frozen. Whether from fear or shock, she wasn't sure.
In front of her lay a human-sized doll, one that looked familiar but she couldn't place where she had seen it. But the thing that shocked her wasn't the doll.
Blood had drenched the floor beneath it, a large puddle of it had formed and began to creep away from its source.
The girl's breathing quickened as she suddenly became aware of something that she was holding. The feeling of cold metal was pressed in her hands. She slowly raised her hands and looked down at what she was holding. Seeing it, her hands shook, the kunai she was holding clattered onto the ground. Her knees went weak as she fell back in fear of herself and the doll in front of her.
Her limbs went heavy as she heard a strange noise coming from behind her.
Plomp. Rattle. Plomp. Rattle. PLOMP. RATTLE.
A wooden puppet in the character of a dog stood beside her, surveying the scene. Her eyes gradually looked to her right to glance at the thing next to her. Its head jerkily looked her way. Its eyes were wide and unblinking as it stared intently at her.
She didn't dare move. The thing went to the doll, spasming as it took each step as if invisible strings controlled its joints. It stared. And stared. And. Stared.
The girl had the immediate urge to move while it was not looking. As her leg slightly moved to run away, the puppet's head turned to her at a neck-breaking speed. Did she trigger it?
The puppet's body slowly moved the face her. Once it completely faced her. Its teeth began to chatter. Its head tilted and twitched in every direction. Without another thought, it rushed to her and grabbed her throat with a maniacal smile etched into its face-
Akari jolted awake, covered in a cold sweat, her hands already clutching onto the kunai she left under her pillow. Her eyes dart around her room as she breathes heavily, her brain trying to differentiate reality and imagination.
In the corner of her eye, something moves. She immediately throws a kunai in the general direction.
Thunk.
Nothing was there. Akari took let out a shaky breath, wiping off the sweat from her forehead. She sat up against the headboard of her bed, trying to calm herself down before trying to sleep again, glancing at the clock.
4:34
26 minutes until she had to wake up again. Might as well stay awake until it goes off.
