Promises (Kingdom Hearts)

Chapter 1

As your two best friends landed in the ocean, you tried to run from your spot next to Kairi on the shore into the welcoming waves of the sea. They had finally returned from their journey and you couldn't wait to see them again. Before you could actually begin running you felt a hand on your shoulder and turned to look at Kairi. She gave your shoulder a slight reassuring squeeze before speaking.

"I can tell you're really excited, we both are, but let's stand here just like we have everyday for the past year and wait for the them to get out of the water."

You smiled and nodded at her. Goofy and Donald had ran towards Sora the moment he hit the water and Mickey had done the same for Riku. It warmed your heart to see the strong bond of friendship between both groups, the same bond you shared with Kairi, Sora, and Riku.

Sora had reached the shore, slipping in the process, and Kairi had stepped forward to meet him, extending her hand out. In his hand he held the charm Kairi had given him. He grabbed her hand, returning the charm back to her. In that moment, you weren't sure if you had imagined it but, it seemed as if the two of them were two different people. But, the moment was gone in the blink of an eye and you weren't sure if you'd actually seen it to begin with. You turned your attention from Kairi and Sora to Riku, he was standing a bit farther back just as you were.

You decided to follow Kairi and greet Riku, after all the two of you had been very close. His long sliver hair shined in the setting sun as his gaze shifted towards you. The way he stood there in the water with the setting sun behind him made your heart beat faster, made your cheeks heat up, and gave you butterflies in your stomach. Those were all things that had happened to you before in his presence. However, they weren't things you really gave much mind to. You had barely put one foot in the refreshing water when your (e/c) eyes met his turquoise eyes. Even though the two of you we're far apart you had locked gazes. You immediately stopped mid-stride, your long silky hair .flowing in the wind. Your heart sank and your eyes welled up with tears along with the tight feeling in your throat.

"He... He broke his promise," you whispered to yourself.

You saw Riku smile and took a deep breath and continued walking slowly. You battled your tears the entire walk towards him. You stood in front of him, staring behind him at the sky which was now getting darker.

"You haven't changed one bit," Riku said.

"Nope," you forced a smile,trying to control your voice. He was the one that had changed.

"I missed this place so much, I missed you," he grabbed your hand and you looked up to meet his eyes. That was a big mistake.

"I... I missed you too," the tears began to fall so you proceeded to hug Riku who hugged you back.

"I didn't think you missed me that much," he chuckled, "come on, let's join the others."

The two of you walked towards the others who had lined up along the shore. All of you stood and watched the sun set into darkness, just as you knew Riku had.
