Nightmare time

An ear-piecing scream sliced through the darkness.
"Shit. Dad's back isn't he." Lex mumbled. Hannah nodded back to her in fear. Lex rolled over in bed, pulling the sheet right over them both.
"Everything's going to be fine Hannah, just think about some happy things ,ok? We'll get to California, we'll be fine." Lex grabbed Hannah's hand tight as she said this, not sure which of the two she was reassuring the most.
"Will Duke and the Witchy lady be back tomorrow Lexy?" Hannah mumbled, hugging her Webby doll as though it was part of her.
"I suppose so. Wait, did you just say she's a wit-" Before Lex could finish her sentence, the door flung open with a bang.
"Your dad's gone for good. STOP STARING LIKE THAT, JUST GO TO SLEEP FOR GOD'S SAKE!" Screeched Pamela, her body covered in several noticeable bruises. Pamela's temper has always been volatile, triggered by the tiniest things, she entered the bedroom just as quickly as she went out.
"We have to get to California Hannah, I don't know how much longer I can take this, you can't grow up here. I'm going to be an actress and writer and we are going to have the best life." Lex tried to comfort a distraught Hannah, she wished she really believed the words that came out of her mouth, but after a while it seemed like the dream just went further and further away.
It was a restless night for both of them, each lost in their own thoughts and worries. But they had learned to forget these things ever happened, they carry on like the night simple didn't exist. However, there was a creeping concern in Lex, Hannah's nightmares seemed to be getting worse, Webby seemed to gain more and more power, but it was impossible to talk about.
As always, Duke and Ms Holloway came over to check them (Holloway's first name had become a certain modern myth in the local area) and the normal routine began. Pretend that everything's fine when it's not, grin and bear it. Put your head up and make sure that under no circumstances you show your internal turmoil. That's what their mum drilled in their heads before every visit.
A dodgy job at toy zone of all places was the only thing Lex could do to support her dreams and Hannah, she felt worthless. Like nothing she could ever do would make her existence worth something, she would never get out of this cycle. But Hannah and the dream to get to California was the only thing keeping her going.
"What's shaking Banana?" Ethan smirked as he said this, sliding in through the window.
"I'm ok Ethan" Hannah's head was low, but at least a half hearted smile grew on her face.
"You know what happens if someone sees you."Lex was thankful to see Ethan, but she preferably didn't want him to get arrested for trespass.
"I will not get into trouble ok! And guess what, there's this new doll going around, I think with enough product demand, we could make it to California. We're going to California babe, we can finally leave this town!"Ethan seemed to burst with excitement, this was the singular best moment of his life.
Lex struggled to find the words. "I- WE'RE GOING TO CALIFORNIA!"
But little did they know, this wouldn't happen, and along the way the world would end.
