"You shouldn't go alone."
"You can't come along if we want this to work."
Jes was pacing around the room while staring at the address in her phone.
"You don't realize what kinda shit you're about to walk into."
"Yes, I don't! But at this point I'm willing to take my chances."
Emma almost froze in her place with the stare she got from Jes, but like a switch flipping her expression calmed down, letting out a sigh. She walked over to a sofa before sitting down and taking out a cigarette, lighting it up and inhaling deeply. There was silence as she thought, rhythmically tapping her foot on the ground. Smoke left her lips as she spoke.
"Alright," she took another long drag, "I'll give you half an hour. If you're not out by then I'm coming in."
Emma considered her offer,
"Give me an hour."
Jes looked at her, unspoken thoughts passing through her mind.
"Fine, you have an hour."
Emma felt her shoulders relax a bit and crossed her arms, then looked at Jes with curiosity.
"Will it be only you and Caleb? I mean, there will probably be a lot more ferals than before."
Jes had somewhat of an amused expression on her face as if dismissing the thought.
"What can happen at worst, they'll kill me again?"
She blowed the smoke at the ceiling, crossing her legs.
"I've had rougher opponents than them, don't worry."
Emma raised her brows while watching her, trying to calculate just how strong she could be.
"If you still have doubt, the only thing that can truly kill me is another necromancer, and those are hard to come by these days huh?"
Emma could feel the sourness of the sentence, remembering once again how lonely it must be to be one of the last of your kind. She nodded and Jes spoke up before she could talk again.
"Can I ask something?"
Emma tilted her head a bit, giving her a questioning glance.
"It's something I've been curious about since the moment you were embraced." She stood up, walking closer to Emma and standing in front of her, "When Jacob embraced you, what were his exact words?"
Not expecting such a question, Emma searched her memory for that day, not a time she liked remembering.
"I think something about a legacy..." She tapped her fingers on the table she was leaning on.
"May you carry the legacy in your veins?"
Emma turned to her, her fingers stopping and her expression changing.
"Yes, those were his exact words." She furrowed her brows, "Is that something important?"
Something in Jes's expression changed when her guess was confirmed, slowly nodding and looking somewhat impressed.
"So that fucker wanted to make sure you'd be gone for sure in case he died, not guessing I'd end up reviving you." She inhaled the rest of her cigarette, putting it out between her fingers, "That, or he knew he was gonna die and it'd be his last chance to leave a surprise for his sister."
Emma tilted her head, her brows creasing more,
"What's that supposed to mean?"
She took out another cigarette, walking back while lighting it up.
