I woke up the to the feeling of my phone vibrating in my pocket. I looked at the screen and saw that it was a text from Andrew.

Andrew: Are you awake?
Mason: no.
Andrew: lol, Mason.
Mason: What's up?
Andrew: Nothing..I just need someone to talk to.
Mason: what's going on? I saw your mood completely change yesterday.

He didn't reply. I got a bit worried. I squinted at the time on my phone; it was 2am.

Mason: Andrew??

I sighed, now wide awake. Then my phone started ringing.

"Hello?" I answered as I put the phone to my ear. At first, all I heard was white noise.

"Hi Mason." Andrew's voice said through the phone. We both sounded tired, but by the way his voice quivered, I could tell he'd been crying.

"What's the matter?" I asked, my eyes now closed.

"My grandmother..." he started before breaking down into sobs which became crackled through the phone as he couldn't control it.

"Andrew?" I didn't really know what to do, "j-just relax." I soothed.

He didn't relax at all, he sounded as if he was having an anxiety attack. I heard him say something, but it wasn't very clear.

"Huh?"

"Come...please." He repeated.

I nodded, although he couldn't see it, and hung up the phone. I put on my shoes and made my way out of the house, wearing the same clothes as the day before. I'm glad I was still wearing Andrew's hoodie because it was really cold at 2am. Andrew's yard was kinda different from mine; garden gnomes, huge round stones and plastic flamingoes of different colors decorated the yard. I walked up to the front porch.

As I was about to knock on the door, my phone vibrated.

Andrew: the door's unlocked.

With that, I opened the door quietly and walked into the house, closing the door behind me. Everything was dark and quiet. For a second, I just stood there, not knowing where to go next. Then I heard soft sobs coming from upstairs.

It was really hard to see, but I managed to find the staircase that lead upstairs. I walked up until I was in a dark hallway, using the sound of Andrew to find my way. I walked straight down the hall until I got to the door that was the source of the sobs, touching the knob. I never thought of how strange it felt being in someone else's house. I opened the door and stepped in.

"Andrew?" I called out softly, noticing the dim light of a cellphone in the corner of the room.

When I got no reply, I walked toward the light until my eyes adjusted to the dark and could see Andrew's small form sitting in the corner.

I kneeled in front of him. "Andrew." I said one more time. His cellphone slightly illuminated his face, allowing me to see it more clearly.

"My grandmother died, Mason." he said softly after a minute of silence, his voice shaking on every word.

His grandmother. I remember from our... not-date at the old diner when he told me so much about his grandmother. He was really close to her and she was the first one he came out to. She loved him for who he was- which really reminded me of my grandmother.

"I'm so sorry..." I said, thinking about how I would feel if something like this happened to my grandmother.

I was thrown backwards and off my knees as Andrew jumped forward to hug me. It was really unexpected, but I guess he really needed it in this moment. His hands twisted the fabric of the hoodie I wore as he buried his face in my chest and started crying again.
