A Dwindling Light
Chapter 1: The years that Followed
"Mommy, look!" Emily yelled, She began to giggle and clap, "Look, MONKEY!" Emily pointed and let out a squeal, I walked along the path, following the three year old closely. I then noticed, She was pointing at a lemur. I picked her up in my arms and pointed at the primate. "That's a lemur, not a monkey, Well. Maybe the monkeys cousin." I said as I gave a goofy smile. Emily covered her face and giggled.
The lemur ran and lept to the rooftops, making a chittering sound. Emily fought out of my grasp, I set her down and let her run ahead, She took a seat at the cliffside, watching the waves crash into the rocks below. She let out a sigh of relief. I took a moment, but I was eventually able to sit beside her. We watched the sunset on the western horizon.
Dendrin walked up behind us, placed a hand on my shoulder and smiled. "Back already?" He asked, He ruffled Emily's hair, She looked up at him with a toothy smile and turned back to the sunset. I gave Dendrin a nod, "She's always interested in her roots, instead of fairy tales, she wants to hear about how life in the village was." I said with a smile. He helped me up, and led me to his guest house, he poured me a cup of tea, and we sat in the chairs on his porch.
It wasn't long before Emily began whispering to herself. "What's she saying?" Dendrin asked as he took a sip of tea. "She's talking to her Grandmother, or her Father, This is where she feels most at home. I can't say I blame her, I share that comfort." I explained. "Akira, I know I say it every time you visit, but you have a beautiful child, and I'm glad she has something similar to prayer to help her cope with her grief." Dendrin said, I turned to him, and gave him a concerned look.
"Is it considered grief if she never met them?" I asked. Dendrin took a sip of his tea and took a breath, "Yes, she might not have gone through the death, but she knows of how you cherished them, your pain is her pain, children are very receptive, believe me. I have four." He said with a laugh.
