A DARK NIGHT

August 7, 2028

JAMES HELD UP a pastel blue color swatch that had lavender painted on it next to a green one with daisies.

"That's it," Lily said with a nod and a smile. "That's the one for the baby's room."

James looked down fondly at her stomach that was starting to show. It had been 16 weeks ago that they found out there was going to be another Potter in the family and they had been excitedly getting everything ready. So, naturally, wallpaper was of the utmost importance to James and Lily Potter.

With the downfalls of throwing up nearly every morning and craving the weirdest food, it had its highs too — like moments like these where they could come together over wallpaper of all things or just the general excitement ( and attention on James's part ) of being new parents.

"You sure?" James asked as he squinted at the blue.

"Well obviously, it has lavender on it," she huffed. "And you know how I feel about lavender."

"Alright," James beamed. "Whatever you want, love. Glad we got that out of the way."

"Well ... actually ... it doesn't feel perfect," she mumbled as she examined the swatches more.

"See!" he exclaimed victoriously. "I knew you weren't set on it!"

"Maybe a purple and green combination?" Lily asked.

"I'll go to the shops tomorrow," James said with a smile as he leaned in and pressed a kiss to her lips. "You should go to bed, it's getting late."

"Don't tell me what to do," Lily grumbled as she tried to get up from the couch.

James had already stood up and was walking over to his coat to put the swatches back in and started to laugh when he didn't hear his wife behind him.

"Don't tell me what to do," he mocked. "Struggling that much?"

He turned around and his smile immediately dropped at the sheer terror on her face. Lily, on the other hand, felt excruciating pain in her abdomen and the unmistakable feeling of blood running down her legs.
