EPILOGUE
2001
"Just because you're-" Bailey counts the numbers out on her fingers. "Five years older than me, doesn't mean you get to be king!" Bailey shouts at her best friend, Grim.
"Yes it does!" Grim answers equally as loud.
"Kids? What's wrong?" Bailey's mother asks to walk over.
"Grim won't let me be queen!" Bailey wines. Grim rolls his eyes with a light chuckle.
"Just share." She kneels down to be at their level. "This is your last playdate before GIm moves away. You be king," She points a finger at Grim. "And you be his queen." She says to her daughter.
"I'm not his anything." Bailey crosses her arms over her chest, leaning onto her hip.
"Just play, and have fun!" She gives both Grim and Bailey a tight hug, then walks away, blowing them a kiss.
"Here." Grim says putting the crown onto Bailey's head. "You be queen, I will be your knight in shining armor."
Bailey giggles when he puts the sword in the air. She jumps onto his back and tells him to slay the fire breathing toad dragon. As the day goes on the two children run, jump, and rule the backyard. Grim protects Bailey from all threats, bugs, branches, and wind that is too fast. That's how it's always been. Grim is Bailey's knight in shining armor, while Bailey is his queen.
- A few hours later -
"Say your goodbyes kids." Grim's mother, Ellen smiles.
Grim gives Bailey a big hug before getting into the car, and rolls down the window. "Bye my knight in shining armor!" Bailey calls out waving.
"See you later my queen." Grim waves.
Then he is gone.
