I run about four blocks before I stop to catch my breath. I don’t want to, however, because when I stop I think and I don’t want to think about what just happened back there. You just destroyed a water fountain. Smooth. I shouldn’t have let myself get worked up, I brought this upon myself and now who knows what will happen. The school will most likely not believe Heather’s hysterical cries of “She broke it with her mind! She broke it with her mind!” but when the look at the hidden cameras there’s no hiding it. Because I did break it with my mind.

When I’m done hyperventilating I walk the rest of the three blocks home. My mom must be out running errands because according to Heather she lost her job. I don’t care anyway. I don’t have the energy to talk to her and confront her about what Heather said because then we’ll have to get into specifics and then she’ll find out about what happened. But at least I get some peace and quiet for a little while. When I get home and unlock the door I run straight for my room and stick in my earbuds to drown out the world and everybody in it.

Eventually I must have fallen asleep because I dream. Strange dreams. Dreams that make absolutely no sense. Jesse is in them but he is doing things that no human is capable of doing. We are standing in an open field full of green luscious grass that seems to go on forever in all directions. The sky is blue and captivating like Earth, but it’s not Earth. It’s different yet the same. Anyway, Jesse is talking to me but I can’t hear him because he’s so far away. He’s moving his hands and the sky that was once blue is now filling with thunderclouds bigger than I’ve ever seen. Lighting shoots through the air making me fall on to the ground hitting the spot I was just standing in. “Jesse— Jesse stop! Stop you’re scaring me!” I scream at him. But he doesn’t. It starts pouring rain, fast. Really fast. I have to keep my head down for the fear of choking and drowning from the water. And there he stands across the field moving his hands in gallant movements. “Scarlett.” I hear him call. Over and over again he calls my name but he’s too far away to hear me as I scream his name back.

That’s when I snap awake to my mom shaking me hard on the shoulder.

“Scarlett what the hell are you doing home? Why is your school calling me and talking about you attacking Heather Winslow? And why do you keep muttering Jesse?”

I shake my head trying to remember the dream I just dreamt. Jesse was in it, I remember that much. He was making it storm with his hands in that weird place that seemed like Earth.

”Scarlett answer me. What did you do and why are you home so early?”

Heather. Water fountain. Running away. It’s all coming back to me way too fast giving me a massive headache. “I-I don’t remember. What are you talking about?”

”The principal just called me and told me that you attacked his niece with a water fountain and flooded an entire hallway.” She pauses and looks down at her hands. “Scarlett, baby, what did you do?” she whispers.

She knows. I can tell. She knows this is exactly what happened when I broke the vase. “Yeah, well why didn’t you tell me you were fired and that you stole something? Huh? You tell me that and then I’ll give you an answer. “

Hurt flashes across her face and she stutters until the right words find her, “Scarlett, it just happened yesterday,” she said softly, “And I didn’t steal anything. Why would you say that, who told you that?”

”Heather told me. She said you stole produce and that’s why you were fired, is that true?”

“Scarlett, I swear I didn’t steal anything. I’ve never stolen anything in my life, don’t you know that?”
