Pagoniá rolled over and groaned, flexing her stiff muscles.
"Why did the sun have to rise so early?" she complained to herself.
Sitting up and glancing around, she noticed Tilepátheia was already awake and combing her hair.
"You dream really loudly," Tilepátheia informed her matter of factly. "Your dreaming woke me up an hour ago."
"Umm, I'm sorry. I guess?" Pagoniá replied, shrugging awkwardly. She didn't really know how to respond to that comment.
"So, what's the plan for the day?" Tilepátheia inquired.
"I don't know. I guess we should try to find the other ice people or something," Pagoniá mused. "The only problem is that we have no idea whatsoever where they might be."
"We are in the middle of a hot desert. Other than air-conditioned homes, what is the coolest place you can think of?" Tilepátheia demanded.
"I guess the answer would be underground," Pagoniá responded, not sure what Tilepátheia was getting at.
"Where would you find ice people?" Tilepátheia asked impatiently.
"The coolest place around. Oh! So you think they might be hiding underground?" Pagoniá asked, her face brightening. It had only taken a few microseconds for her to understand Tilepátheia's thinking. "But where underground? The desert is huge," she acknowledged, her smile fading.
"Hmm, maybe as far away from the capital, where all the fire people are, as you can possibly get," Tilepátheia offered sarcastically.
"The bushlands! Of course," Pagoniá exclaimed, finally catching on.
"I hope Pozhar bought a map yesterday, because we will need one to get there."
"I did, and water too," Pozhar said, finally sitting up. "Where are we going again?" he asked, not quite awake yet.
"Pack up your things," Pagoniá ordered, squaring her shoulders. "We're going to the bushlands."
"That is a very, very bad idea," Pozhar said nervously, after being filled in on the details of the conversation. "Yes, the bushlands might be more attractive to the ice people since they are uninhabited, but did you stop to consider why they are uninhabited?" he said, his voice rising in panic.
"Pozhar, they aren't haunted. The ice people are probably making the bushlands uninhabitable on purpose. Ghosts aren't real," Pagoniá told him firmly.
"Maybe, but dangerous snakes are," Pozhar responded, biting his lip. "I'm pretty sure I've heard some stories about them living there."
"Just relax," Pagoniá assured him. "We'll be fine."
Pozhar finally relented, and they packed their belongings and divided up the water. Pagoniá took one last look at the lush, green oasis with its handful of pedestrians enjoying an early morning stroll. She then turned her face towards the empty sandswept desert plains.
"Come on everybody," she called, as they set off for the bushlands.
