Sofri Shanneim had been planning to divorce her husband for three years.
Still she lived, cooked, and cleaned with the same man. How much longer would she have to endure this suffering? Until her daughter's are all grown and fully matured? That seemed like an eternity to Sofri.
She just wanted out.
The door creaked open and Sofri heard footsteps coming towards the kitchen where she was.
"Cherah." She mumbled softly putting down the wooden bowl of rice that was in her hands at the moment.
"Where's Carah? Is she coming back yet? Did you tell her about lunchtime?" Sofri rambled on as she looked out the window hoping to see Carah walking back towards the house. Cherah simply shook her head and crossed her arms.
"I went into the cave but I couldn't find any sign of her in there," She informed her mother. Cherah was surprised to see a small hint of concern in her mother's face.
"I think she'll be fine." She reassured her. Sofri nodded in response and said nothing as she returned to her work, preparing lunch.
"She's probably just picking up rocks again." Sofri murmurred.
Carah had always expressed a fascination with rocks and minerals. She would often go to the caves like she did today looking for new rocks to add to her collection. Once in a while though, Carah would walk down towards the beach and collect stones and seashells there instead.
"Did you check the beach?"
Cherah shook her head, "Pretty sure she's not there anyways." The girl then disappeared through the doorway.
Sofri sighed as she ran her hands through her dark, wavy, black hair.
She turned back to her thoughts, sinking back into the rabbit hole of divorce, family problems, and stress. She tried to remember the last time she and her daughters had a heart-to-heart conversation since the discovery of their father's affair with another woman.
Sofri sniffed and wiped her eyes before she could cry.
"Everything falls apart.
Everything comes to an end.
You must stay strong for the girls however."
Sofri choked up at the words her now deceased grandmother had told her. But she also felt to a flicker of confidence, of hope, and of determination.
