"Hey Kiddo," Greeted Grady as Sophie glittered into Havenfield's pastures. She had just kept home after talking to Mr Forkle after what happened in the storehouse. "Keefe left something waiting for you in your room." Sophie tried to read the odd expression Grady gave—his smile looked genuine, yet sad.
"Oh, thanks." She walked up the stairs and entered her room. Iggy—her pet imp—welcomed her with a loud belch. Expect, he looked different. Keefe or Dex must've dyed him once again. She studied the teal imp that had stripes on it too. Teal like Fitz gorgeous eyes, but her heart... it didn't flutter. She wasn't sure she was ready for more Fitz thoughts after their break-up, but she wasn't ready to fully move on either.
Sophie fanned out the burp stench as she approached Iggy to pet him, and as she got closer she noticed a letter resting half underneath his cage. Keefe's letter, probably. She unfolded it, reading each word closely. She read three times, making sure she hadn't misread it. But she read it just fine, and she hated it. Her emotions spiked with anger and sadness and a billion other emotions in the mix as well. But mostly, she felt betrayed. After all these years of close friendship, this is their goodbye? She was positive Keefe could sense them from the Forbidden Cities.
She sat down on her bed, taking the letter with her. She read it again. And again. And again. If she really meant a lot to him, why would he leave? How could she just be happy when Keefe ran away? Why would he want Sophie to forget him? No way would that happen. Not in a billion years. She curled into a ball, tears streaming down her face. She hadn't even got to say goodbye. She never got to say how much he meant to her.
"I need you to PROMISE that you won't try to find me." Read the letter. Technically, she had never promised it, not yet. And she was never going to. More tears escaped her eyes, filled with many emotions. They ran down her cheeks, dropping to her bed, making it wet. "Are you alright in there, Miss Foster?" Sandor asked from the other side of the door.
She didn't trust her voice at the time, so she tried to mumble, "Mhm." But it just came out as an odd, unplanned noise. She wiped her tears, lied down, and pulled up her sheets. She promised herself she would reach out to Keefe telepathically, but not now. She wasn't in the mood.
Sophie heard a knock on her door and before she could even answer, Edaline came him. "Hey, Sandor told me you weren't in the best mood. What's wrong? You can tell me anything, Sophie. I hope you know that." Sophie shot a glare at Sandor who was standing at the doorway. All he responded with was a simple shrug, then closed the door giving Edaline and Sophie privacy.
She sigh. "It's just..." She paused, gathering up her words in her mind. "Keefe. He... He left a message saying he ran away to the Forbidden Cities and said he wouldn't be coming back. He even told me to forget him." Her voice got quieter with each word.
"Oh, sweetheart. I'm so sorry," She said, pulling her into a hug. Sophie rested her head in the nook of her adoptive mother's shoulder. "I know he's probably thinking of you right now, he would never forget you." Sophie resisted the urge to remind her that he wanted her to forget him, not the other way around. "Plus, this is the second time he ran away. I'm sure he'll come back. He just needs to figure things out."
"But this time, it's different." She mumbled. "Last time he had planned to come back when he ran away to the Neverseen."
Edaline took some time coming up with a response. "Sophie, I'm sure he's just trying to protect you—well, everyone in general. He would most likely come back once he controls his abilities more. I saw how carefully he acted. He even restricted himself from talking, and boy, he is a chatterbox." She smiled the slightest bit, trying to lighten the mood. But Sophie didn't return the smile. "Why don't you try communicating telepathically?" Edaline asked when Sophie didn't talk.
"He'll probably ignore me, but I'll try... later."
Edaline sighed. "Okay, but get some rest. Don't spend too much time stressing." Edaline snapped her fingers and mug filled of Slumberberry Tea appear in her hands. She raised her eyebrows and moved the mug towards Sophie as to ask, "Want some?"
Sophie answered the way she always would, "No sedatives. I'll just have Silveny help me rest."
"Worth a shot." She sighed, teasingly. "I'll have Mallowmelt ready for you when you wake up—if you wake up until tomorrow morning." She then exited the room, leaving Sophie by herself.
Sophie pulled her sheets up closer. She decided to transmit to Silveny so she can sleep. "Can you help me sleep? It's overwhelming with Ke-" She cut herself off, realizing the Keefe-Chants her slip would earn her.
"KEEFE? KEEFE! KEEFE! KEEFE!"
Sophie sighed. "No Keefe. I just need rest."
"NO KEEFE? WHY? WHY? WHY?"
She cut off there mental connection, not having the energy to explain—or even think about it. She stared at her rather plain wall as her eyes grew heavier and heavier.
